| New Yorkie owner, looking for advise =) Hello, After a lot of thought I decided to take the plunge and buy a Dog, I had not given much thought to breed, only that he was a smallish dog. I've had 'pip' 2 days now and all I can say is i'm stunned, bowled over by him, he's 11 months old and is the cutest, funniest, softest attentive little thing i've ever know, i'm just blown away, i'm in a constant state oh "awww, pip" Anyways, we had a big walk today and pip is now fast asleep, but im overcome with a desire to fulfil his potential as a Dog, i can tell he's pretty smart and i want to teach him new tricks, lead control etc, although he's absolutely adorable, does not wee, chew, bark, but he does pull on the lead a bit, so i need to help him there. I guess I'm just after any peals of wisdom, or just first time tips for a new Yorkie owner, I love this little fellow so much already, he's so dam cute and wants to please me. He looks like a teddy bear too! Any help is really appreciated, from both of us lol! |

| Welcome and congratulations!!! The only advise I have is to use a harness instead of a collar. That way when the dog pulls on the leash it won't hurt his trachea and you have more control with them in a harness. Good luck to you and pip!! |

One of the best training videos on Youtube I found was Kikopup's channel. What I found good about Kikopup's philosophy was her focus on positive distraction and substitution techniques, along with shaping for success and excellent use of successive approximation. She doesn't use Yorkie's but the techniques she teaches will work with any dog. Oh and no affiliation, your mileage may vary and all the usual disclaimers, etc... hth, Jo

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Congratulations on your new baby! I see you've made a few good decisions... (Breed and joining here!) Harnesses are highly recommended. As long as the pup pulls forward, nothing to worry about. But if he happens to pull back, go with him as they can slip out of a harness, especially if it is a little loose. So take time and fit it to him snuggly....

| Welcome and congrats!!!! I Know the feeling. I have been in awww with Riley since the moment I went and picked him up..... He has been so unbelievably good and such a sweety. I took him to a puppy beginning class at PetSmart, immediately. I have had two other dogs, in the past, whom I had taken to PetSmart. I pretty much knew what to do in order to teach him commands.... But, I had a coupon for it so I signed him up just to get him out and about and to get him a little socialized. He did really well in it. He will be 1-year, next week.... The weather here is getting nice and I am starting to look and see what kind of classes there are around to sign him up for. He loves training and doing tricks. Good Luck! |

| Awww. That's so sweet. It's never too early to start a little training ~ sit, stay, down, come. Buy a few dog books and try some things out. One thing I really enjoyed - was agility training. Boy, that will bond you with your dog like crazy and will definitely fulfill his potential as a D O G! Puppy Classes I highly recommend too. Pretty laid back and a lot of socialization. Enjoy!

I just wanted to hop on the harness bandwagon. Their tracheas are just to tiny. A harness helps to protect that trachea. I have found they don't pull as much with one either and you have more control of the walk.
