| Oh no, I think Gatsby might be getting fat! Gatsby who has a smaller frame went from weighing 6.6 pounds to weighing 7.3 pounds in about 30 days. he eats about a 1/2 cup of taste of the wild a day. He walks about 2 miles a day for his walk. (some days he walks 4) he is very active and the vet said he was a good weight back when he weighed 6.4 I cant cut back on his food and i cant exercise him more, what should i do?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | When Joey gained too much weight after a tricks training class, the vet recommended cutting the food by one third and adding green beans in it's place. The green beans act to fill them up, so they won't have hunger pains, but are low in calories. You could cut about a tablespoon of food a day, and give about 5 green beans. I use the frozen variety thawed, because unlike the canned they contain no salt, and Joey loves them. Weighing weekly helps, and look for about an ounce a week loss, adjust food as necessary. Instead of a snack before bedtime I put 5 pieces of kibble aside and give it to Joey as a bedtime treat. I also make him play fetch for his morning meal, throwing a toy and having him retrieve it for one piece of kibble, and half his dinner is given this way. Keep others from giving him treats too. You might want to do a vet check; to be sure it's not water weight, that's an awful lot of weight in one month.

| Princess has also gained weight in about the last month. She went from 6.9# to 7.6#. That's a good idea about the green beans, I'm going to try that with Ms. Picky when I shop on Sunday. She starts her boosters next month so I'll have her vetted then, too. But a pound is a significant gain for them.

| Honestly? 1/2 cup a day of TOTW may be a bit much. Which formula are you feeding? A few are pretty high in calories. I feed Jackson, who is 16lbs, 1/2 cup of Acana kibble per day because it's very calorie dense (430-ish kcal). He gets some wet food, too. But 1/2 cup of TOTW may be too much for him.

how do you figure out what is an acceptable amount? i know the companies will tell you to give more than you need to, but i have no idea how much to cut it down.

Thanks for the info... I also was a little surprised in Remy's weight gain. She was 3.5 lbs up to about 14 months.. now she has gained about 1 3/4 lbs. (she is up to 5.2 oz-- no bones showing on this girl!!) I was so happy with the first pound.. but now she is getting chubby. I have posted before and knew some trick.. they are not working for us so now I will try the green beans.

| Is there a reason why you can't cut back on his food? Was the second weigh-in right after a meal and/or before a bowel movement? That could change things by a couple ounces at least. Does his stomach look bloated?

| You can cut back the food a little. Add some fresh veggies at every meal and he won't miss the difference.
