| Snake In My Backyard! I'm calm now but 2 hours ago I was hyperventilating & in hysterics. I let Max outside to potty and heard him barking oddly. Cooper and I went outside to see what was going on. Max was hitting and playing with a HUGE snake. I immediately grabbed Cooper and tried to grab Max but he ran from me. After screaming and shouting wildly I finally got a hold of Max and all 3 of us ran safely inside. It's all a blur to me now. The snake was coiled in the corner and appeared to be at least 4' long and about the diameter just a bit smaller than a water bottle. It looked tremendous and I don't think I'm exaggerating. It was dark in color and I can't remember any pattern or any other characteristics. I've been crying for about an hour as I already have a fear of snakes from having a snake infested apartment (long, thin snakes living under the carpet and showing up randomly) when I lived in Florida 3 years ago. I called my partner to come home from work and we searched the whole yard and found nothing. I'm not sure what to do. I called animal control and any county departments I could think of, including my pest control guy and they can't help. Does anyone know of a pet-safe way to get rid of snakes. I'm fairly traumatized, especially after finally getting over the apartment infestation.

| That's terrible! Where I there is a snake removal company that will come and get the snake, but, you have to know where the snake is. This sounds stupid but when you see a snake, you need two people, one to watch the snake and one to go call for help. If you don't keep an eye on the snake, there is no telling where it will go. I would be petrified if I saw a big snake in my yard. I have already found two small ones. We have already been warned that the snakes are on the move this year due to the drought we have had. They seek places with sprinklers and swimming pools.

| OMG thats crazy. Thank god Max wasn't attacked. WOW! Check out home depot or lowes to see if they have anything to back those monsters up. I hate snakes. In NY they aren't that popular as racoons are. Thank goodness.

| In our community we call Animal Control for things like this and they are kind enough to come. I actually found a baby garden snake in my den one day after we'd had work done in the house, grabbed Jilly and the phone and ran into the front yard to call for help! I actually had to stay out there until they came and retrieved it. The only other thing you can do is go to a hotel as if you are like me, you can not stay in a house that has an actual snake in it or its backyard! (Almost kidding - I am seriously phobic of snakes!) I hope your AC can help. I am shuddering for you just reading this!

| I am so glad nothing happened to Max how frightening! Your Florida apartment sounds so creepy LOL I would not want to put my feet down! I can understand why you would be freaked out. I hope you can find help to get rid of the snake in your new place. Best wishes.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I don't blame you for being freaked out. Snakes terrify me, too. I had one in my garage 2 summers ago that scared the bejeebers out of me. I screamed so loudly that my next door neighbor came out to see if I was ok. I'm not sure how to get rid of them, but you can prevent them from coming in to your yard by making sure you don't have hiding places for them. They like wood piles and planters as well as swimming pools and ponds. I know some people use the plastic owls in their yards to help scare them off, too.

| THAT story sounds familiar. (This is waay before we got Teddie, last summer) I heard my 3 dogs barking and growling, went outside to see what was going on and all 3 had cornered a snake. Not just any snake, but a coral snake. (venemous, bad juju). I immediately called my husband outside in hysterics, trying to pull my dogs away from the snake (thank God they are well trained and listen), and my husband proceeded to chop the snake with a shovel. I used egg shells around my fenceline because I heard they hate slithering over those, not sure if that worked but I haven't seen another one yet. I searched the yard, plugged the holes I found in the ground (displacing a few frogs ), and removed the wood pile that may have served as a "come hither" to the snake. *Note: I live in front of a HUGE farm where all manner of snakes reside in peace according to the farmer and farmhands. I got the ole "This is Texas little Lady, everything is bigger and more dangerous!" lol

| Karen, the apartment situation sounds like a lifetime worth of nightmares! You can buy a snake repellent at most home centers, like Home Depot. Snakes are often attracted to water, like the baby pool you may have already filled in your backyard. I was always told that lawn fertilizers repel snakes, but I have seen several in my yard, including a very large black snake. We have very few poisonous snakes here. I'm not sure about your area.

| EW, I HATE snakes. One showed up in my dads laundry room last year and my step-mom thought it was a belt laying on the floor at first, reached down to pick it up and started SCREAMING. Lol, I think it was just a gigantic garden snake but the thing put up a fight when my dad was trying to get it out of the house. I think they got it in a box somehow and then my dad chopped it's head off outside. My moms dog, Carmen, a cockapoo was flinging one around in her mouth 2 years ago The snake didn't do anything to her, thank goodness...

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Now I'm sitting here with my feet off the floor in case there are snakes under my desk. I am completely freaked out by crawly and slithery things. I haven't seen a snake in my area in years. I think if we had any I'd have to move somewhere else. Like Ireland. They don't have snakes in Ireland, do they? |

| The Florida apartment situation was a nightmare, especially with my landlord living overseas. The complex and homeowner's association offered nothing so I went to the local news and was seen all over S. Florida. This situation is a little different as the house is not infested. I read this morning that an early summer breeds more snakes. It's April and 88 degrees already. I never keep the kiddie pool out even more than 1 day, there are no dirt piles or wood chips and my backyard is completely empty. We saw this same kind of snake last year and we (well, not me) chopped it in 1/2 and disposed of it. The snake is gone. I don't know where it is but don't see it anywhere. I've read that Lowe's has a pet friendly repellent called Snake Away. I've also read that Marigolds are a natural repellent however, Swamp Marigolds are poisonous. I don't yet know the difference. Here's the kicker. I now have to walk my dogs several times a day instead of just let them out back. oh yeah, THE STRAY DOG! Forgot about him. I was blowing that off because I don't want to call Animal Control. Luckily I didn't see him out and about. However, I just came home and spent 1/2 hour pulling burrs out of legs and bellies.

| Oh geez, I've got the creepy's now. I'm so afraid of snakes. I know we have a few garden snakes and they still scare the living day lights outa of me. I know if my Alexis saw one she would go after it and probably get bitten. This sure does scare me. i hope you able to find it.

| Am I the only "snake lover" First of all, I would have to agree that I would be traumatized by the thought of snakes living under my carpet and showing up randomly. Wowsie! I think I would have moved into the backyard and let the slitheries have the bed! You can buy snake repellent at Tractor Supply, Home Depot, and similar type stores. I'm not sure if it works or not, though. I am so very sorry you are traumatized about the snake. For your peace of mind, I hope he leaves and doesn't return. I was raised in Florida and there was a cyprus swamp behind my back yard. We also had lots of snakes, both venemous and harmless. I was taught from the time I was a little bity thing to respect snakes, how to distinguish between the bad (venemous) and the good (non venemous). It was FORBIDDEN to kill a non-venemous snake especially King Snakes. I remember we had a huge king snake that lived under my playhouse for years and would sun on our garage steps. I can never remember seeing a venemous snake in our back yard. I grew up with a great respect for snakes and now, as an adult we try to keep a black snake in our horse barn to help take care of rodents. Unfortunately the hawks have just about depleted our snake population. |
