| 16 weeks old puppy training I just brought my very first puppy home yesterday. My question is...I live in NY and it is raining and 30 to 40 degrees out. Is it too cold to train outside???I feel I'm just confusing him. Ok to pee here today but not in a month... The women that sold him to me said to use the pads for another month or so. He came form a pet store....I know you won't approve, but I couldn't just leave him there...love at first sight. He is only 2 lbs. He of course has had no training and want to make it as easy as possible for him. Any input would be greatly appreciated! |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I would say it is absolutely too cold to take a puppy that small outside. Plus he needs to have his vaccinations before you expose him to the outdoors - there are some pretty nasty diseases he could pick up just being where other sick animals have been. First think I would suggest is that you take him to a vet for a wellness check. You need to take whatever medical records you received from the (gasp) pet store along - so the vet won't unnecessarily repeat any vaccines he may have had. And I would suggest you pick a spot in your house where you can live with a potty pad all the time. Unless you're planning to take him outside frequently and guard him until he goes, he's going to need a place inside. These little guys are just to small to be allowed outside unattended -- there are too many predators - including human ones - that can easily snatch them. And welcome to YorkieTalk! I hope you will find as much helpful info here as I have. |

| Yes pleeeease don't take him outside too much, they are susceptible to everything right now and I'm assuming you haven't started him on heartworm medication as he is only 16 weeks old. First thing is first like Boopster said, take him for his wellness check and start his series of shots. They'll also take a stool sample to check and see if he has worms which is common in babies. You got him from a petstore so who knows where he could have come from Make sure he's healthy before worrying about the training!

| I'm in NY, too. I've had Belle since mid-Feb and with the way the weather has been, I can count on one hand the number of times she's been outside longer than the few seconds it takes to get to the car. Even then she wears a coat and shivers for a few minutes til the car warms up. Too cold up here for these little ones! Soon you'll be able to bring him outside, and then you can work on teaching him to potty out there.
