| They do not need clothing to keep cool...if you are hot, your Yorkie is hot..so carrier her on hot pavement, stay out of the sun, provide water when out..most Yorkies stay cool if they are clipped in the summer..I live in south FLorida and mine do not pant from heat... |

| They don't need clothes in the summer- but I will sometimes carry a cheap lightweight tshirt and if it gets really hot, I will soak the tshirt and put it on them to cool them down.

Also, I'm getting Mango some sandals since he likes to walk a lot, and I don't want the cement to be too warm for his paws! | |

| If you have to use a carrier in the summer...use cold packs under the crate pads..and you canbuy carrier fans that attach to the front... |

| That's a good idea, it gets really hot here in the summer and Pnut hates to go on walks. I think I will try this next time!!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | dogs do not need to wear clothes to protect them from the sun, unless they are shaved so short that their skin is exposed (or they are a hairless breed). In that case a sunscreen should also be used (one that is made for dogs). I find that my yorkie gets really hot in the summer if her coat is longer so I make sure i keep her shaved down pretty short. Also I do not allow her to walk on black pavement (streets, driveways, parking lots, etc) because it can damage the paw pads. Sidewalk cement isn't usually as hot so I don't worry to much about that unless we're walking for a very long time. I honestly think shoes are ridiculous and not needed for this. If you are going to be walking a lot and its very hot you should probably leave your yorkie at home or carry him. Since yorkies are so small they can get heat exhaustion quickly in the hot weather, especially when exercising. Get a fully enclosed carrier that has an attachment for a small water bottle and perhaps a fan, or cooling mat to keep the dog comfortable. By fully enclosed I mean one that can be zippered closed and has mesh sides to allow airflow, instead of one with an open top where they will be exposed to the sun.
