| Edited my message Sorry I hit enter too quickly. Hi everybody. I'm new here as you can probably tell. I currently have one 7 year old Yorkie named Emmy, and one sweet 4 year old Chocolate Lab named Susie. I had another Yorkie till about a month ago. He was my baby boy. His name was Bogey and he was 6 years old. He was the most beautiful little boy. I had to put him to sleep after we found out he had some kind of rare deformity with his epiglotis which was impeding his breathing. I am so sad still. I have never lost a dog before. Our house is so empty without my little cuddly guy. I was not thinking of replacing him, because there is no replacement...but I just can't help wanting a new puppy to love. I have been looking in my area in San Diego, but I am just clueless as to how to get a good quality puppy. I'm just afraid to get scammed to or get taken by someone who is out to make money. I got my two Yorkies by asking through the Kennel Club and seeing if they could give me names. Emmy came to me at 10 months and I was never able to contact the lady again. My little Bogey came from a nice lady who I was able to contact yesterday, but she dosen't know anyone who has puppies and dosen't have any currently. Yesterday I went through the AKC site and there was a lady there who has 3 puppies for sale. She seemed really sweet but she says this is her first time having puppies and shes very new at this. She is local and seemed happy that I wanted to see them, see her home, see the parents etc. Her dogs are AKC registered. Can anyone give me more advice? or perhaps has another way I can locate a reputable breeder in my area. I'm in the San Diego area and am willing to go 100 miles or so. I really want to talk to the breeder, see the mom and dad etc. I will try and post some pictures of my babies. |

| Welcome to YT! You should try the YTCA. They are the mother club for the yorkshire terrier, and have a breeder referral list. Good luck finding your new forever friend.

| I agree with above. I would also like to point out that if you get any strange PMs from breeders with low post counts trying to sell you a puppy, please ignore them. If they are afraid to post in the open they are trying to hide something. Start with the YTCA and look for referrals there. Remember to buy your breeder first, then the puppy. A reputable breeder will stand behind her pup for the life of the dog. Others will never return your call after they get your money. Sad, but the truth is that bad breeders outnumber the reputable ones by a landslide. Take your time and do your research! The fact that your previous breeder does not have any pups available now is a good sign she is reputable. Most reputable breeders are scaling back big time in this economy. Most likely why she does not know anyone else who has pups now either. Oh and welcome to YT!

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | She did say yesterday she went through the AKC site, and found one breeder who just had her first litter To the OP: go back to the AKC site and click on show information, then your state, and you will see the upcoming shows for your state and there maybe conformation shows in your area comiing up. Then go to the show and meet some Yorkie breeders. Guide to Finding a Reputable Breeder The above article may cover some areas you already know, and some that you may not have thought of before. Now in terms of this being an AKC members first litter. I think what is very important to know is this person's history in the breed. How long was she "in training' so to speak. How many champions has she finished? Who is her mentor? What breed clubs she belongs to? How active is she in the dog world? Does she train in obedience and or agility? Does she support rescue, and in what ways? What are the goals of her breeding program? What are her lines? How knowledgeable is she about this breed? Does she know the top 10 health concerns of Yorkies, and does she know the health of her lines? What specific pre breeding tests did she have done on her breeding pair? You mentioned that your Yorkie 7 yrs old died of a rare deformity of his epiglottis? I'm interested do you know the name of this condition? Also did the vet say this was a genetic condition? And finally did you let the breeder of this pup know what happened to your beloved 6 yr old Bogey? Now I know sometimes in this "instant" society where we can go to a large supermarket and get that loaf of bread we want today, it is difficult to wait on a quality puppy. The axiom here is often cited as : you buy your breeder first, then your dog. Here there are many knowledgable and passionate Yorkie folks, that can help you assess a breeder, who may know personally about their lines and or their reputation, and of course we have breeder reviews which quite often bring to light breeders of less than stellar reputations. Welcome to YT and wish you much luck and fun finding your perfect pup

| Trust me that's a serious warning to be taken! Even from someone saying they got a pup from a breeder and suggest them-ask about the breeder here first in the open. Ask about any specific breeder in the open. Even here don't rely on the PMs you get after a post like this...look for them to respond in the open and then check them out. Neither AKC or YT membership ensure someone is a reputable breeder. Quote:

AKC offers their classified section for a price, they do not investigate, they do not put their stamp of approval on the breeder. You pay $35.00 and you can advertise your litter.....
