| Hi and Welcome to YT! Yes, it is better to have pets spayed or neutered. You won't have to worry about having or creating unwanted litters, and you can avoid many health issues that can arise from not having it done. It can make them better pets too, because they won't run off looking for boyfriends or girlfriends whenever the mood strikes them. My only concern is to not get it done too early, as that can cause a different set of problems...

| Spaying and neutering are the responsible thing for pet owners to do. I've done that all of my life. It not only prevents accidental breeding, but also prevents male dogs roaming. It will also keep other male dogs from going after a female in heat. There are also health benefits. It prevents cancer in later life, as well as other medical problems. So, I can see only benefits to spaying and neutering. In all of my life, I've never had a pet that we didn't spay or neuter - from the time I was a child.

I think Rosie was 7 or 8 months old when she was spayed. So, at two years old she should be fine. I would see about doing it on a Friday if you have the weekend off. Rosie was up and running in about 48 hours I think. It shouldn't take her long to bounce back.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | You got lots of good advice from your mom and in this thread. Dogs are fertile all their lives, so it's not something they outgrow like humans. To be safe and to help prevent certain cancers, spaying and neutering is the best way to go, in my opinion. Also, you might want to have the vet check and see if she has any retained baby teeth, yorkies don't always lose their baby teeth on their own, and the best time to do it is during a spay or neuter since they are out anyway. Best of luck!

| Our yorkie is 18 weeks old. We have been discussing with our vet when to neuter him, his first appt at 11 weeks he weighed 2.1 lbs..so the vet was like, not for a while, he's like a premie. Well he is now about 3 lbs and at the last vet appt (beginning of March) the vet said we could do it in a month...so that would mean beginning of April. Is this too early? We want him to get neutered before he gets to the age of sexual maturity so he doesn't start marking his territory, etc. We are also planning to adopt another little girl yorkie (puppy) 2nd week of May, so we thought it would be best to get him neutered before then. Any thoughts? |

| I would like to know an appropriate age as well. At my last visit my vet asked about neutering and I put it off - Kody will be 17 weeks tomorrow. We have a vet visit this coming Saturday and I'm sure it will come up again. At last visit Kody was 5.5lbs. Thank you.

| The average age to spay and neuter is 4 to 6 months. But if your puppy is very small, it is best to wait to 6 months. My yorkie was neutered at 4 months old and did great. He was up and running the same night, like he didnt even know it happened. Thankfully i work at the vet clinic, so i can take them to work with me, so i can watch them. But as long as you have a healthy puppy and it isnt too tiny, 4 months is safe. ALot of shelters do it very early, because they want them to be fixed before they leave the shelter. But unless it is a large breed we usually suggest the 4 to 6 months. ANd just a little info for those who dont want them to start marking. Mine were all done by 4 months, and 2 of them still mark. SO alot of that is just in their personality. |

One more thing - I hear a lot of baby teeth/not falling out and waiting to combine that with the neutering - what's the opinion of that. I know the little ones shouldn't be put under more than once, if not abosolutely necessary - have you gotten you Yorkie neutered then had to get teeth pulled later - if he/she retained them?

Yes!!!!! It is much better to have your dogs altered! Dogs who aren't fixed, are more prone to uterian and testicular cancer......

| Yes, if your puppy has baby teeth by the time you have him neutered they may want to pull them. But we only do this if the adult teeth are in and you can tell the baby one isnt going to fall out. ANd yes, we have had some who the owners didnt want their baby teeth pulled. So we did the spay or neuter, and then a few months later the teeth didnt fall out, so they had to bring them back and have them pulled. They recover very quickly. ITs not like haveing major surgery. The teeth are usually very loose and come out easily. However some lose their teeth no problem. Mine did. But obvioulsy it would be less stressful for you and your puppy if it could all be done at the same time. ANd lest costly. |
