| Peeing in crate, help! Hello! I have an almost 6 month old female Yorkie, Sophie. For the first few months she was sleeping in her x-pen with her bed and a pad at night. 98% of the time she would never use her pad overnight and when she did it was usually first thing in the morning when she heard us get up before we got to her. We had to go out of town this past weekend so we bought a small wire crate for her and a little bed for inside. She seemed to do well in there, went in there without fussing, and slept through the night. Since she was doing so well we figured we would do this at home. For the first couple of nights things seemed to be going well. But, today I saw her sniffing in there and I pulled out the bed and it was full of pee. I don't know if she only did it last night, or if it's been accumulating for the past few nights. She's gotten a lot better during the day only having to go out several times versus every hour and even goes to the door to wait. So, I feel like she's getting the hang of housebreaking, but nighttime still may be difficult. So, should we return to the pen with bed and pad or continue using the crate. I feel like with the pad she doesn't learn to "hold it" through the night, but I'm not sure if she's stilll too young or not (We typically take her out for the last time around 10 or 10:30 and then she gets up around 6 or 7 to go out). I want to ween her off the pad at night because we are going out of town in May and my MIL is watching her and I don't want to have to bring the entire setup with us every time we travel. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!! |

| Hi Sophie, I am right there with you and can totally commiserate! Hudson is about 9 months, almost 10 and is having similar problems. Granted, I only got him a few weeks ago, so I'm re-training him in way that is different to how the breeder had him. Essentially Hudson is fine during the day and around the house. If I ever leave the house for a short period of time (3 hrs max) I crate him also. However, he has been having more and more accidents (poo and pee) inside his crate not sure why!! At his age he SHOULD ideally be able to hold it. One thing I would suggest is that you have to be extremely diligent about keeping the crate clean. You have to know if your baby has soiled in her crate overnight b/c that may signal that she can't hold it that long. If you aren't sure, check the crate and the pads/blankets carefully before letting her go back in. If there's even a small scent of their pee/poo, they may want to continue to eliminate there. Everyone speaks very highly of the cleaner brand Nature's Miracle which can be found at most pet stores. Hmm, are you also getting her enough exercise during the day before she's crated at night. I know exercise gets the bowels moving. Good luck, keep us update and thank you for sharing your story. You're not the only one with these challenges! Feel free to PM me if you want to swap more tips. |

| Hi Sophie -- one more thing, I just realized you said that your girl was able to hold it for a long time when you had her on the pee pads and only after you switched to the crate did she begin to eliminate. I wonder if it's the change in sleeping that maybe has her anxious and wanting to pee? Just a thought...am sorry I didn't catch that the first time. Hmm...hopefully some other YT members can chime in... |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Poppy did this for a little while too. She has been house trained since she was around 6 months old, but a few months ago began to pee in her crate at night. I tried everything from making sure she peed before bed, getting up in the night and everything to sort it out. In the end she just stopped doing it, so I dont know what happend. It lasted a couple of weeks so I assume she just grew out of it or she was sleeping better at night. When asleep your urinary system slows down which is why you dont have to pee as often as when your awake, I assume she wasnt sleeping all the way through the night at those times. Try taking her for more walks through out the day to tire her out.

| In my experience a Yorkie takes longer than other breeds to crate train...just when you think they've got it down they have a "relapse" Hang in there, give her a break from the crate maybe a week or so then start again. It won't last forever...our Mia was the worst so messy didn't care. We ended up (after a long time of trying everything) giving her a break and buying a different style brand new (no smells) and that seems to have worked. Not in one night mind you but over time. Just remember for all that you put into your young Yorkie (all the mess and energy) they will give you back their whole life for their entire life!!!

| Thanks for all the advice. I put the divider up in her crate to give her less room and that seems to help. Last night she slept from 10pm to 7:30 a.m. with no accident. Maybe it just happened a few times because of the sleeping environment switch. We've also been trying to take her out around 10:30 if we're still up, even if it means waking her up. We take her on two 2-mile walks a day, so she's well exercised and so am I I realize she still is only five months so hopefully she'll grow out of it in time. Just being patient and washing a lot of blankets! I know some people say not to put a blanket in the crate while training but I can't bear the thought of her laying on the hard plastic Thanks again!! |
