| Ex Pen Escapees Well, tonight I almost had congestive heart failure. Before leaving the house to go visit friends, I safely confined both of my babies in their ex pen. Bella is just a couple of days shy of 1 year old and is an avid jumper, but pretty tiny at 4 pounds. (She has never escaped from the pen.) Jett is 21 weeks and 1 pound 15 ozs, and extremely tiny. (Although he thinks he is part rabbit, and hops around like a bunny.) They had toys, food, water, and both of their beds, plus a potty pad in the pen. I came home after about 4 hours, and Jett was GONE! Bella was still safely confined in the pen. I was CONVINCED that someone broke into the house and stole my baby. But low and behold he was found in the clothes I tossed on my bedroom floor before leaving the house. I put him back in the pen while I brought in the groceries. Got all the groceries unloaded and put away, and BOTH dogs were sitting at my feet waiting for me to play with them, excitedly!!! They had both escaped. This is a pen that I purchased from Petsmart, and SHOULD be good for most small dogs I would think. (It is black metal, that is in sections.) Now I am petrified that they will get hurt climbing over the pen. How common is it for little guys to escape from the pen??? Do they make taller ones?? I think I may try to return it to petsmart, to see if I can get something taller, but then I worry that they may hurt themselves. Anyone have any advice??? Mom to Houdini 1 and Houdini 2 LOL

| Walmart.com: Pet Gear Octagon Pet Pen with Removable Top in Sage: Dogs this is what I use, it has a roof on it and a floor. But I don't know how well two will fit in it, you'd probably have to get the big size (I only have one so I have the small one). I use it mostly for travel, but set it up in the house every once in a while for Harley to play in. (He has his own room with a baby gate for most of the time).

| I don't like xpens just for that reason...our babies are climbers...I have the softsided play yard...I like it cause it has a floor in it so I can put it anywhere in my house, its easy to clean...and it has a mesh top that zips up so they can not climb or jump out...Harley my 6 month old has already climb out of his...like you I went to the store came home and both he and Bella meet me at the door...so I knew it was time to zip the top up..easy fix .they don't sale them in stores...you have to order them online...I got mine off Ebay...xpens/playyards for dogs. Harley loves his...I keep the door zipped open for him...I keep his food /water in it and a bed...its like his den his safe place to go and he loves it...I have 2 of them...44X24 and 57x36...I got the small 44x24 first...I loved it but it seemed kinda small once I had his food/water/bed on one side and a potty pad on the other side...not much room for him to play so I decided to get another one since I have a 2 story home...so I ordered the 57x36 much much bigger...I use the small one upstairs in our room with just his bed in it for bedtime...and I have the 57x36 downstairs...works out perfectly for me...and very easy to travel with they fold right up and take no space at all in the car.

| I use gates to close off entrances I don't want them to go in and to confine when I am gone. Josie is a climber so I had to use gates that had no way of her getting a grip on anything. Metal ones. Check out the thread where little Anakin got injuried climbing. To be safe I would use the ones that are being posted here if I didn't have the area to put mine in. Those seem very safe. |

| I would return that xpen...its a accident waitting to happen...its a hazard/unsafe for our babies. I just read this thread and thought of you and your babies climbing your xpen. Anakin is at the emergency vet...

| Thanks ladies for the advice. I will definitely look into the other pens available. I really thought I was keeping my little one safe in the ex pen......guess I was wrong. Bella can clear it jumping over it, I just put her in to keep Jett company, he is much happier if she is in the pen with him. My pen is on a TILE floor in the family room. My imagination goes wild thinking what COULD happen to my little one!!! Had dreams even last night, and not nice ones!!! I will be heading to return my ex pen as soon as I can figure out how to get it back in the box. LOL

Senior Yorkie Talker | Sophie is a jumper and I got an Iris pen with a door. At Home Depot I bought a four by eight panel of backsplash material. (That would be behind a shower) I had them cut it to 38x38 and I put one on the bottom and one on top. I put Sophie and Bo in and it works perfectly. |

| Bella is a jumper also, but for some reason she doesn't attempt to jump out of her ex-pen. "knock on wood". Go to dog.com, they have a few to pick from also, along with toppers for some. Good luck. |
