| Is my crate too small? Hi Everybody! I've had my Maximus since he was 10wks old…he is now a year & I've finally had it with the cleaning up after him. I know alot of you are probably thinking I'm crazy, I already know this I just want to know is my crate is too small? I went to PetSmart last night to get one & as I was walking to the register, I was stopped by a trainer who told me that if I was using that to potty train…It was too big??! I was devestated The idea of putting Maximus in a crate after this long crushes my heart, but I don't have any other choice. He needs to be trained. But the crate I ended up purchasing (as per the trainer's advice) is SMALL!!!! I feel that he'll be squished! He's only 4lbs. It just doesn't seem right. Can someone please help me before I have to actually put him in this today. I kinda just need to know that I'm doing the right thing. |

YT 1000 Club Member | Choosing a Crate: Criteria for choosing a Crate: Height: Tall enough for your Dog to stand up in comfortably. (top to bottom inside, not the door, it’s head should not touch the top) Width: Wide enough for you Dog to turn around in. (side to side inside, not the door, slightly more than the length of your Dog, from the base of its tail to its chest) Depth: About 1.5 times the length of your Dog at its present size, NO LARGER. (front to rear, inside when the door is shut, it should be able to stretch out fully) (measure your Dog from the base of its tail, to its chest, and multiply that times 1.5) Type: Can be all Wire, Fiberglass or Plastic, some are collapsible. (must be well vented, with a door large enough for the Dog to enter comfortably)

| I would have to guess that a 4LBer would be fine in that size crate. Do you know how to use the crate for potty training? Have you cleaned your entire house really well of any pee? If not you need to use an enzymatic cleaner to get rid of any urine smells. Is he neutered?

| I have my 10 lbs dog in crates that a 100 lbs dog can get in...you can use it in a play pen too Steve's post is pretty detailed in description...I say at least twice as long wide as your dog and 1 1/2 X their height, but I'm not an expert I just think personally anything less is too confining... Then again I used a 6' x 6' play pen (4'x4' is recommended for Yorkies FYI) with the crate in it open door as a bed to get them used to it as a bed area, also a play area, a potty area, then a food area...then potty train... How are you potty training? Outdoor, indoor, grid, potty patch, potty pad (pee pad) will be needed at least for a bit until bladder control can be obtained...stick to a strict feeding and potty schedule I looked at your crate size...but I think it has more to do with measurements of dog...height, length than weight so guessing those by weight...but it seems fine can you post a pic?

| I have a wire crate that is 18Lx12Wx14H and it seems a perfect size for a yorkie. I bought it for potty training but ended up not needing it for that. I lucked out with this new puppy & didn't need to use it for potty training because I set up a playpen with bed & pee pads and she used the pads each time. Then when I took the playpen away, she still used the pee pads. I reward her each & every time she goes on her pads when I am home to see it. I swear she'll hold it while I'm gone so she can pee 5 times in my first hour home to get five treats
