| How do I get my yorkie to eat?! My yorkie has always been very picky with what food he will eat. He was just sick with a bug of some kind and is recovered from it but still wont eat. We've tried not giving him any treats of any kind and keeping food down (canned food) so that if he gets hungry he might eat. He never seems hungry unless we are eating human food. He begs and begs... Ahhh! I don't know what to do short of putting him in an appetite stimulant... I'm assuming they make them for dogs. I am sick and tired of him not eating. He eats our food, when we give it. He's a healthy 7.2 pounds. I don't know what to do to get him to eat dog food!! Please help!

| Chloe was pretty picky when I first got her. What I did was go to a store that gave out sample bags of food. I laid out 5 different food for her to try on small plates. The one she ate the most of was the food we went with. Then she got that food put down for 30 minutes in the AM, after that it was picked up and put down again in the PM. Eventually when she was hungry she ate. I do now add different things to their food to give them variety (veggies, fruits, chicken, baby food, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc). But its important not to vary what they get too much when they are being picky because they learn to wait it out until you try something new. Now she will eat a bowl of dry kibble as soon as it is put down in front of her.

| We've tried different brands and styles of dog food with Bentley. He never eats what we put down, unless he's super hungry then only eats a few bites worth. We've tried yogurt, he refuses to eat it anymore. I just put a little cottage cheese in with his food and he was interested but only licked his food and never ate anything of it. The food we are trying with him now is the prescription ID gastrointestinal food from the vet. Our vet is supposed to call us back today with some ideas. I'll ask then if an appetite stimulator is a possibility.

| With Sassy, after she was ill I bought some of the cheapest canned food possible *Mighty Dog* and she ate that and this was after turning down treats, human food, and her usual kibble. The vet even put her on a prescription diet and she turned that down. Tonight I am going to start adding some Natural Balance kibble to try and get her back on track with a good diet. She is a BIG PICKY EATER and frustrates me to NO end...but I still love her. |

| Of course if you start home cooking, do your research to make sure you are providing your dog with all of the necessary nutrients he needs |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Tallulah is on the ID food as well... she's not really interested in it if it's cold, but if I warm it up a little, she can smell it better and usually gobbles it down. If warming (be careful to stir it and not let it get TOO hot) doesn't work, try sprinkling just a tiny bit of parmesan cheese on top. |

My grandparents had a Boston who lived to be 23 years old and all she ate was table scraps. Well at least we now know a few things they "shouldn't" have, but the rest is easy.

| While the idea of home cooking for my dog is an interesting one, I can't see myself cooking all that much for him as I don't cook often for myself. My vet just called me back and suggested I make him boiled chicken and rice. :sigh: I guess I'll try that tomorrow.

| I did try hand feeding him canned food (yuck!) but he wouldn't take it. He used to eat kibble when I'd hand feed him when he was really young but won't do it now. Darn doggy. So I'll keep googling ideas. If I feed him chicken and rice I hope to start mixing in doggy food so he will get used to it and eat it exclusively eventually. Thanks for your ideas

| Thanks for the ideas. Today for lunch I cooked chicken and rice for myself and for Bentley. I didn't add any butter but did add just enough italian dressing (low fat) in the pain for the chicken and made rice for us. I cut up one medium sized chicken tender in tiny pieces for him and mixed it in the rice. It almost filled a standard sized coffee cup saucer. He at all the chicken and about half of the rice. I was thrilled! So for dinner I'll make hamburgers and green beans. I'll use Pam spray on the pan and only add worchesteshire sauce to the burgers and a little garlic salt to the green beans. I'll give him some of that. I need to look up how to cook for dogs. I'm probably doing it all wrong but I want him to be interested in the food which is why im adding garlic salt and stuff to it. I want it to smell like mine so that he will eat it. Thanks for all of your ideas! I'll keep working on it and then eventually start mixing it in with his canned food and try to switch him over only to canned food eventually. I hope it works.

I did homecook for about 8 months. One word of caution - you may want to prepare his food separate from yours and without some of the flavor enhancers like the italian dressing and worcestershire sauces. Those types of things could cause issues for him whereas the basic protein is fine. When Remy gets chicken breast for example (which I still do on occasion as treat) it is baked, with no oil / grease / etc and no seasonings. Veggies are great - and easy to do with simple steaming on the stovetop or in the microwave. Green beans, carrots, broccoli, asparagus tips are all veggies Remy loves. Again, no seasoning - just steam or blanch quickly. I ultimately abandoned regular home cooking because of my work schedule and Remy now eats a raw diet. I was never successful finding a kibble that he would eat, and we tried quite a few. Best of luck to you! Last edited by RemydeHaviland; 03-22-2011 at 02:37 PM. | |
