| Best Type of Leash/Harness? ..story inside My boyfriend's dog just died tonight... a 2 year old Border Collie and he was Totoro's best friend for the few weeks we've had him. I've never seen a big dog be so gentle with my baby. Earlier his aunt took Harley (the collie) for a walk and he saw a transport, broke off his leash, chased it and well.. it was apparently a horrendous sight (I can only imagine ). Many people stopped their cars, came out and offered any help to his aunt who was crying hysterically. The transport driver even came out and apologized, in tears, he said he tried so hard to stop and that he was a huge animal lover as well. Well my boyfriend's mom just found out, she's out of town now and Harley was her best friend as well.. I can't imagine how he's taken it... and all of this had led me to question which leash/harness would be safest for my puppy? I couldn't imagine the same thing happening for Totoro and I haven't even had him a full month... I would be a complete mess. He won't be going for walks until his vaccinations are all finished but I wan't to be well prepared... Any recommendations?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'm so sorry this happened, it's one of my greatest fears. I bought the Buddy Belt for this reason, it's made of leather, and it's a harness with a large buckle on the back, there is no way Joey can wiggle out of it, and unlike those little plastic clip together things, it won't break apart. Again, my condolences.

| First off, I want to say I am so sorry for the loss of your boyfriend's dog... How horrible There are many different harnesses that people use on here... I would recommend Puppia harnesses, Buddy Belt harnesses and Chattiesmom makes great step in harnesses. I think all of those brands are great and your puppy will be very safe with them on.

| thank you so much for the condolences and recommendations, i will be looking into those asap! also Harley wore a harness for larger dogs so I guess it broke off where it connects to the leash... but I still believe in a good harness for Totoro's future safety

| I am very sorry about your boyfriends dog. I use the buddybelt and it is leather and would be extremely hard for it to tear or rip. I had gotten Callie a puppia before the buddy belt and it started ripping one time when she was pulling.

| I'm going to be purchasing a buddy belt soon, I've been waiting till Remy grows a little more. I've heard great things about them. I am so so sorry for your loss, I had a border collie that got ran over when I was a kid. so sad for your loss.

| I'm so sorry about Harley...that is so tragic & unexpected. You may very well save another life... I'm sure many of us will be checking our harnesses & leashes for wear. I have a new puppy, so all of her gear is new (puppia harness) and we'll be getting new again due to growth. I confess, with my last yorkie, she had the same harness & leash for many, many years and I never gave a thought to deliberately inspecting it.

| OMG!!! I'm so sorry for you and your boyfriends loss!!! Harley sounds like he was a very sweet and gentle dog!! I got my girls those "mesh" harness's from Walmart...I really like them...2 of My girls are 7 lbs...and I had to get the XS...for toy breeds...the SMALL was just too big...you just have to make sure you get the right size..they seem like they are good quality....not expensive like some that others have or make...(not that those aren't great too).....but good for my 4 and 7 lber's.... I have no worries of them breaking loose from them...

| I am sorry for your friend's tragic loss. We use the Buddy Belt harness and leash. I don't worry about my boys getting out of the harness, but I have nightmares that the leash hook will break when they pull hard to get at the garbage truck or UPS truck. Because my boys are pullers in these situations, I won't use Flexi leashes or any other kind of retractable leash. I stick to ordinary nylon leashes.

| What a horrible tragedy, and I'm so sorry you all have to go through it. It is so wise of you to really research harnesses, and thanks for doing so since I'm learning along with you.

| So sorry for his loss. I have a harness and leash purchased from Chattiesmom and I have on order a Puppia. Also once I think my Kody has finished growing, I will be investing in the buddy belt for sure.

| I like harnesses that have two different clipping methods- I have the ones that chattiesmom makes- they clip with a buckle and then two d rings come together and are attached to the leash- this way if the buckle ever broke- they are still attached to the leash. It is also very important to inspect any harness and leash periodically for wear- if anything is coming loose or looks frayed or worn in any way- it is time to invest in something new.
