| what is on her head (some advice) Hello Everybody: Mia is new to us as you may know, going on 3 week? Could be two, time is flying by lately. Anyway, im not to sure of to much of her history. So here is the question. I was combing Mia hair this evening, and on the top of her head, there is white flakes. Kind of looks like dandruff, for hairspray build up. In some spots it is kina thick. She is very sensative with her head and her ears. I'm afraid that I will not be able to put bows in her hair. Any suggestions on what this could be. I am getting her to the vet so she can get her rabies, so I can get her professionally groomed, but for now. Also ( I know I said one question) she is very sensative with her ears. she does NOT like the top of her head petted, and or her ears touched. I noticed that she has hair coming right from the middle of her ear. I am also wondering if it is an ear infection. Thanks everybody, |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hair does grow in their ears and many breeders suggest you pluck it, do not clip it. There is special powder you can sprinkle in their ear, so you can grasp the hair, and it does not hurt them to pull it out. Joey doesn't even seem to know when I'm doing it. The special powder also helps dry out the ears, ,moist ears can harbor bacteria and lead to infections, be very careful when shampooing as to not get any water in the ear. The white stuff could be from not rinsing thoroughly enough after you shampoo. Joey's breeder said that was the number one reason for white flakey skin, she said that rinse one full minute after you think you've rinsed enough and set a timer so that you know what a minute is like. Also, it's important to use a good cream rinse and conditioner; this also conditions the skin as well as the hair. I'm concerned about her being sensitive about her ears, is there any smell coming from them? There might be some type of infection, and make sure a vet checks this out. I really like Biogroom shampoo and conditioner, it was specially formulated for Yorkies, and they will send you some free samples if you e-mail the company. They are highly concentrated so mix at least 1 part product to 4 parts water. Bio-Groom - Exceptional Pet Care Products for Over 30 Years

| I think that Yorkies have to have some of the hair taken from in their ears, but I'm not sure. The vet could probably tell you or even the groomer. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | The hair is normal (but does need to come out). It's possible that she does have an ear infection if she's skittish about having her head and ears touched. If she's skittish just because she's not used to being touched there, then make it a positive experience for her. Lots of treats and praise while you are lightly touching her, gradually increasing the frequency and pressure you use to touch. Some dogs are afraid of anyone coming at them from above; you could try approaching underneath her chin first and then moving up to the ears.

| Linus has super dry skin and gets dandruff on a pretty regular basis. He also has some allergy problems in the springtime, which only seems to make it worse. The doctor actually prescribed some special medicated shampoo that we use now and it really helps. You have to leave it on him for 10 minutes (which is really difficult), but we manage. I've also heard that oatmeal shampoo also works wonders. Another good tip, though, is to try to bathe your yorkie less often. Linus loves to play outside, so he seems to get stinky so quick, but now I use waterless shampoo for sensitive skin between baths and it really makes the bath last longer and he's nowhere near as dried out and flaky as he used to be. |
