| what age does a puppy start to show a real personality? So my brother and sister have just about convinced me to get them a pug puppy. We look into rescue but kept getting turned down because, 1.we don't own our house(even though I had a note from the owner saying I could have pets and would be in the house at least another 2 years) 2. we don't have a fenced in yard.( we do have a 10x10 fenced area for them to run in but the rescues want the whole 1/4 acre fenced) 3. my brother is 11 most rescues not under 12.(he is the best kid in the world with animals never rough and takes Gatsby out everyday after school, when its warm) So the breeder I was looking at is not having a litter till the summer so I have time to work with the kids on "The Puppy Plan" They are right now planning out the first 6 months week by week and want to know when they should go and pick the puppy they want. so what age does a puppy start to show a real personality? I mean I know at 2 and 3 weeks they are still fuzzy lumps but when do they play and become different dogs. Just in case you wear wondering when my sister(17) leaves for collage the puppy will stay with me and kodi(will be 13 when she leaves) and then when kodi gets wrapped up in school or goes to collage himself the puppy will move in with Marsha (unless I fall in love and keep it)

| Oh and i feel the need to mention to anyone who is unsure if kids should get there own pet that they together have saved. the purchase price of the puppy and the estimate for all the puppy shots plus 100 in case the price goes up and they are working on the saveing for the cost of a spay/neuter when the pup is old enough they also have a 300 dollar petsmart gift card that our family got them for christmas so they can go and buy food and bowls and collar and leash and shampoo and whatever else they need.

| I think they are showing personality at 6 weeks. Thats how old chachi was i know too young but he did the cutest thing. He would awkwardly try to chase my Daughter who was 5 at the time and had a long flowing nightgown that got his attention. It was the cutest thing ever. Now Jewels my girl started showing personality about 12 weeks

| You know whats a real shame, that rescues that are overwhelmed with dogs will not consider a respectable child as an owner. I was 14 when I opened my own business, and had prior to that owned and paid for 3 horses (I think I was 11 when I got my first), from the time I was 14-17 I rescued four horses. I'm living proof that some kids deserve a chance to own and love their own animals. Yeah ok they need supervision, but not all kids are rotten brats Good on those kids for saving up for the cost of the puppy. They have things as well planned out for this pup as I did for my first horse. Hummm.... I'm trying to think about the personality thing, as I got to visit Harley every week after he was born. I'd say probably around 6 weeks or so, I guess it depends. Harley was a very playful and hyper pup, as was his mom, so when I'd go visit the breeder would let the two of them play on the couch with us, and it was adorable. Good luck finding the right pup for them.

Thank you for understanding,I have had so much trouble with trying to rescue. I originally told them They could not have a pug because I did not know enough about the breed, but they worked together and made a huge power point presentation on the history, the origins, the health, and the temperament of the pug. My kids are awesome. I told them if they could tell me what to expect for every week in the first 6 months and every month between 6 months and a year they could have a puppy that's what they are working on now but could not find the answer about personality on the internet so I decided to help a little.

| Most good breeders can tell some personality traits very young. For instance a puppy who is dominate or fussy or very laid back can be seen in the whelping box. I notice more "personality" at about 3 weeks when they start playing and rough-housing but I know the puppies very well and I'm with them all the time and have the luxury of watching them constantly. To the average buyer you can usually tell if the puppy is outgoing, timid etc at 6 weeks but often it can be later to pick up more of the personality. That's why it's so important to pick a good breeder so they can help you. They know the puppies the best and should be able to tell you personality if you want something in particular. Teresa |

I suggest that you browse the sick and injured forum to see some of the things that can happen. Good luck!

| We have a litter of Aussies right now (our 2nd litter) and they just turned 4 weeks. In some of them I could see "personality" as early as 2-3 weeks but now they are all really showing their spunk or their easy laidback attitudes. I'm on the watch with two of the girls though because the buyer wants the "most tenatious one" and I'm going back and forth between them trying to decide. One day one will be so sweet and the other real bossy and outspoken and then they switch. But there is definitely already a "shy one" and a "super sweet lovey boy". Seeing them every day, all day is a lot easier than just having a little bit of time with them.

Yes i do understand but They are not all alone if something comes up that they cannot pay for i will step in and help. When we get the puppy I plan to add it to my account at the vet. I am a loyal customer who has always paid in the past so if a major cost should come up I can get the puppy treated and then make payments for a few weeks (I think you get a month for every thousand dollars). Just because the dog will be there responsibility does not mean I wont be there to help in heartbeat.

| yes but your comment is still something to think about.pugs can have just as many health problems as yorkies if not more.
