| What do I do?! I dragged my hubby into a pet store today fully knowing what I was going to see, just wanting to show him how sad all the puppies are and I explained to him that they're all from puppy mills etc. I was on my soap box! THEN I see this yorkie that I had seen the day before Christmas Eve when I went to check out the store when it first opened up...it was still there. It was originally 12k, now it's $999. Of course I asked to hold it (stupid me!) and the owner sees that I really liked it and is feeding me BS about it's pedigree. I hear it coughing and I'm assuming it had kennel cough and I felt a mat in his fur too. The owner asked what he could do so that we'd buy the puppy today and said that he could go down to $600 (probably because he was so "old"). He said he'd keep the offer on the table all weekend. I went fishing around and asked about health guarantees against specific diseases such as liver shunt and the lady had no clue what that was and the owner said it would have shown up by now. I've never had a dog with liver shunt, but that's not true is it? Only if it's really severe? (the dog is 4 months old) Here's the question... what do I do?! My sister is currently trying to talk her fiance into taking the dog- she's wanted a dog, specifically a yorkie, forever. Head- don't buy it- no matter how cheap you get it for another one from a puppy mill will take it's place. Heart- who cares?! Save this poor little puppy Help! |

| listen to your head... you have done the homework here and KNOW that to buy a pet store dog is to support a puppy mill... there should be no other options. ps... liver shunt can show up anytime in the first few years. I imagine it could show up ANYTIME, but usually it is the first few years. normally it doesnt seem to show up this young

| We all feel so sorry for pet shop animals, but the minute you buy one, you are putting that money in the hands of those puppy millers. Don't do it please!! If everyone that felt bad for the pets and bought one just to save it, then it would be a never ending battle to end those mills. Think of that pups mom still in a cage breeding and having pups with every single heat cycle till she's unable to produce anymore, then she is taken out and shot. Do you want that cycle to continue? If not, then discourage anyone from buying pet shop pets........please!!!

| I have to pass a pet store every day that I know has puppies and I cringe every time. We do have a strong local group that stays on top of the 2 stores in town that sells puppies. BanditSocks, go with your head. I'm sorry you had to see the pup because I know I would be beyond tempted too. It's one of those horrible dilemmas.

| I know it's hard and I know you want to but I think deep down you know what the truth is. This little puppy is a victim yes but buy purchasing you are supporting the system. If you feel guilty contact the spca or a rescue group perhaps you can foster dogs that way you can do your part? I'm not sure but I know how you feel. |

| Sweetie, how about this....tell yourself that its not an option. Picture that baby's mother in a cage begging to be loved but ignored and left alone in the cold only to deliver more and more babies. Or tell yourself that the puppy's been bought and no longer at this store....whatever it takes so you don't pay a penny to that store!!! They are obviously trying to get this puppy sold so they can replace him with another one! Please, I beg of you, don't purchase this puppy! And please don't ever go back into that store!!! Focus your attention on helping to force this store to go out of business!!!!

| Agree with the others- go with your head. I didn't get my puppy from a pet store, I got her from a BYB- she seemed like a normal, happy, healthy puppy when I got her- it wasn't until some time passed that we started noticing things wrong with her and she was diagnosed with MVD, LP, a weak sphincter, etc. etc. I love her dearly- but she has cost a TON of money in the less than 2 years that I have had her and there were times I fully expected to lose her before her first birthday. Bargain puppies are no bargain. In the end this dog could cause you a lot more heartache than you are experiencing now.

| As hard as it is, leave the puppy there. Don't support puppy mills and don't go in pet stores. Don't support pet stores by buying any supplies there, either. I can't go in them. It kills me.

| Could you offer the pet shop owner a price WAY BELOW what he paid for the pup?? If he's allowing you to pay $600 he probably paid $300 for him/her. Walk in with $250 in your hands and see what happens. That way he has no incentive to buy another pup and is probably losing money and you could give this little one a loving home. Yep, I know, don't support pet shops, but that doesn't help this little one. Just a thought. |

So what happens to the pup if he can't sell it? Isn't it just put to sleep? IDK...just wondering. Seems at some point they, thinking from a business stand point, would consider it a loss (continued feeding, care, etc) and have it put to sleep??? I highly doubt they actually care about the little pup. Or do they give them away eventually? I really could not work in a pet store and see them caged all the time. There's a pet store in our city, and the pups are in an acrylic cage and sleep on top of pellets. I use to take the kids when they were little to see them, but of course no one is allowed to touch them (unless they indicate they are a serious buyer). Now that I know about pet store puppies I refuse to go in there.

I'm wondering if I keep checking every week if eventually they'll just let me take him. I can only financially have 2, but my sister is considering taking this little guy if everything panned out. I just know that there could be such serious health risks down the road and I don't want her to have to deal with that. Everyone else about getting a puppy from a puppymill/petstore...I totally agree!! I was showing my DH how bad they were and everything I have no intention of buying a puppy, and I never even buy toys/food/treats from pet stores that sell puppies. I just fell in love I hope since they had the puppy for so long they will cut their losses and just give it away to a rescue or something or my sister. | |

| Oh my! This is a tough one. On one hand don't support the puppy mills! On the other, if you are anything like me, the heart will tug and tug because you will feel sorry for the puppy. I am not sure what I would end up doing. To be honest, sometimes my heart overloads my brain. Every time I go into a humane society something comes home with me. I just can't help it. Good luck!
