| puppy mills ok what makes a puppy mill into a puppy mill? is it the amount they breed there dogs or just the lack of care the dogs get? i know it has to do with mass production of pups but where is the line drawn between a breeder and a mill? i have a friend the has 2 female pitbulls every single time besy and laura is in heat lui the male gets them now she has the puppies and of coarse they are sold to good homes. now she has practically been bred every heat and shes 2. they feed there dogs i guess good food its not the worst but its not the best. they arent in cages they roam free on there property and in the house. does this make her a puppy mill. i dont get it is it over breeding? i thought a puppy mill was a place that puts say 10 females together and say 10 males together in a room and they let them all just go at it then they sell the puppies very cheap and have no true idea on there heritage or who fathered the puppy wich of coarse then leads to unhealthy puppies. im just not sure of what really makes a puppy mill maybe im a little right .just wanted to know what all of the yorkie talk members think. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | IN MY mind...A mill is a place where animals are caged and never free - They can be large scale or small.... but cages and MISERY are what I feel constitutes a mill - I won't even get INTO their breeding practices because it is just NO LIFE for these poor dogs - The bad mills don't give a damn about health... comfort...or happiness - they only care about how many puppies they can sell and don't care how miserable or sick the animals are....These poor dogs wouldn't know what to do with a toy.... and have probably never even walked on grass or smelled all the great smells in the world...and certainly have never had a hug from a human.... Medical attention lacks and the breeding parents are doomed to a life in a cage. Puppies are taken too soon from the moms and the mom is just used to breed again ...only to say goodbye to yet more puppies too soon.... a bad uncaring breeder sounds more like your friend - Your friend sounds like she needs to visit the puppy mill sites and compare herself to their breeding practices and ask herself - does she REALLY want be compared to a Mill ? |

| thanks for your reply. i have a much better understanding now. just wasnt positive. as for my friend ive been telling her to get the girls spayed. if i didnt have my yorkies i would gladly let the male come her while the girls are in heat. all 3 dogs are very well behaved and she does care for them there not caged and they do get played with and they go for rides in the car.my only problem is the puppy production. i feel there are way too many pitbulls in snimal shelters and thats how ive been trying to convince her to stop breeding and just adopt another pup. i really didnt mean to make her out like a horrible person but i do agree maybe her seeing what happens to all of these puppies she will take my advise. thanks agian redvett. you are so informative and helpfull. i love when you reply |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Awwww...thank you I know people have different ideas on what a mill is - your friend may be a good person - just a bad breeder and maybe helping educate her on the stress of over breeding can help her understand what she's doing to her dogs ? I know many times - ignorance is all that stands between someone who can be a good breeder - and someone who I would classify as a bad breeder.... If she loves her dogs ....wants them to provide healthy puppies AND keep her moms happy and healthy - she may want to research her methods and maybe make some changes....that way she can be proud of what she's doing instead of just seeing her dogs as a paycheck |

| will try my hardest to convince her ive been hinting around about going to the pound just so she can see. i have a big soft spot for pitbulls and in our area there are atleat 20 of them in the the pound and we live in a small populated area. the only bad thing is every time i go to the pound i bring another pet home. now that i have my yorkies they will give me the strength to use it as a learning lesson. for years i would go to the pound and bring home dogs that were ready to be youthanized and then put them in the newspaper and find a good home for them of coarse free of charge. i think thats why my husband was ok with the amount of money i spent on sampson and makya. after we got two yorkies and spoil them to death he knows i wont bring pets home because i dont want to put the babies in danger.lol the last dog was a rotwieler about 10 months old i laugh when i think of rosco cause he was a nightmare. he got into everything but it was worth it cause he still happy with his owner. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | That is soooo great of you - I know each of those shelter dogs knew your heart was in the best place and you did a great thing helping them...I know how hard it is to try to walk away and sometimes we just don't have the strength to do it - we can't save them all - but it sounds like you sure did your part in trying... |

| KVUENEWS featured a story concerning puppy mills yesterday. It wasn't as broad and clear as I was hoping it would be but it shed light to the horrific things dogs go through in a mill. |

Having puppies at a young age and every heat is VERY unhealthy. Could you imagine getting pregnant one after another after another? It takes ALOT out of your body including nutrients etc, not to mention it's painful. Does she put her on a special dog food when she's pregnant? She is asking for huge problems later on. Just ask her what her reason is for breeding and how she would feel if the dog ended up in the vet's office over this. | |

| A puppymill is what I saw tonight in the news . A lots of Yorkies and one other breed in a house , they said 100 dogs. There were dead ones on the floor , they other didn't have food and water . I let you guess where they were feeding themselves . The SPCA and Animal Protection took the alive ones to the vet and the vet told them that they never have seen dogs so mistreated , they euthanazied them . That is a puppymill for me . Make me soooooooo to see peoples abusing them . |
