Senior Yorkie Talker | Grooming issues Okay, so I am having some problems with grooming. Bentley was just neutered and they put an IV in as a precaution. So....they shaved a spot on his leg. I'm trying to grow his hair out long and now I'm worried that when that spot gows out it will forever look strange. Should I cut him all the way down and start over? Or will it be very noticable? He is quite short so his hair already covers his leg pretty well. I just hate the thought of starting all over again as its taken a while to get to where we are now. Also, the hair on his nose. His groomer usually shaves it down. To keep it out of his eyes. I have read that if grown out it will lay flat. I don't really like it shaved, I'm just at a loss as to what to do while it is growing out. His facial hair seems to grow so slowly. His beard is quite long, but on the bridge of his nose it is short. How long will it take for it to grow long enough to lay flat? And what can I use for watery eyes in the mean time? I try to keep the hair from his eyes but when he plays it manages to get in them. Should I just wipe them? Oh! And one more thing, brushing him. I try to brush him daily but I have read not to brush him while he is dry or the hair will break. I feel like I am doing everything wrong in grooming and need help. I love the long hair look and want to make sure I am doing it right. Like I said, he is quite short, so his hair is about 3 inches from the ground. I can't seem to get it to grow any longer and the groomer tends to trim an inch every time. Sorry for all the questions. Thank you guys! |

| Check out this section: Yorkie Grooming Talk - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community There are lots of grooming tips there - I learned a lot since joining YT. No, you shouldn't brush him dry. I always spray with a grooming spray or a leave in conditioner spray when I brush Beamer. I don't think it will grow strange.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | It's going to take a couple of weeks for the hair on his leg to blend in completely, not all that long.

| Lulu had an IV in both of her front legs & both were shaved. She also had luxating patella surgery & it was shaved up past her hip down. I'm not going to cut the rest of her hair right now. I'm simply going to let the other hair grow. It looks incredibly funny right now, but it won't be long until it grows and evens out.

| You didn't mention Bentley's age. Has he blown his coat yet? If he has, he is still too short for the shaved spot to make a difference as his hair grows out. No need to worry. I groom many Yorkies, and like people, they all have different hair. Some are thin, thick, grow fast, grow slow. Use a spray conditioner before brushing. You can use a little bit of vaseline on the hair between the eyes to keep it under control while it grows. If you have a good groomer, she will want you to explain in detail what you want done with his coat. If she doesn't do as you ask, you may need to find another groomer. I ask my clients each time what they want done and if they would like a change from the last visit. As you probable know, growing the coat long will take a lot of work from you. Also, after you brush, always take a comb through, down to the skin for hidden mats. Hope this helps. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | He is almost 10 months old. What does "blown his coat" mean? I hope that's not a dumb question. There's so much I don't know. As for leave in conditioner, can I use Dove leave in conditioner? That may also be a stupid question. Just when I think I know quite a bit I learn more. Haha! |

| Sorry, it means he will eventually shed his puppy coat and his adult hair will grow in. It happens gradually. You may notice his black puppy color changing to a silver or blue. The adult hair will lay flatter against the skin, unlike the curly puppy hair. I don't recommend using people products on pets because pets lick their fur and it can make them sick. You can buy hair conditioner in just about any store these days. It is a must have, if you are going to grow Bentley long. |

| I have never heard of a yorkie "blowing" or shedding his puppy coat. Louis' hair changed in color, but it didn't shed.

| There is an ongoing debate about weather Yorkies shed or just change color. Educated Vets, who I have worked for, say ALL dogs shed. Then you have people who try to sell pets as non-shedding, non-allergenic, and claim they don't shed. Every time I groom a yorkie, there is hair in the brush, so I tend to believe that all dogs shed, some more than others. And yes, Yorkies do change color slowly as well, it usually takes about 3 years until they reach their full potential. |

Yorkies do most definately change color -- all one has to do is look at a long strand of puppy hair and you can see the color changes along the shaft of hair. My Annie is 8 months old and you can really see the changes in the hair on top of her head. She is still not done "breaking" color.

Beamer rarely gets mats now, but the other day he did have one and I was out of "Cowboy Magic" so I sprinkled cornstarch on it (learned about the cornstarch in the Grooming section) Yorkie Grooming Talk - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community The mat combed right out. I wouldn't use a furminator on a Yorkie though. Yorkies do not have an undercoat. I just use Madan brushes and combs on Beamer,

| Don't cut the hair on the leg. Learn from my mistake. I was trying to even out the hair on Sophies leg and now she looks like she is on stilts. If you pup has a cottony coat, mats will be an issue, if the silk coat not so much. I find just using a comb works better on my girls. But each dog and owner has to find out what works best for them. |
