| AKC Registration Advantages I plan to register our new pup, Finn, but what are the advantages, if any? I don't plan to make him a daddy in the future, so are there really any advantages, besides bragging rights? |

| There is no reason to register a pet IMO...I have had pets, most all champion-sired and I did not register them... |

| Alot of people don't register their Pets with AKC. However, for the small amount of $20 you get a nice certificate for "proof" of ownership (a microchip could do that instead), free 30 days insurance, a nice puppy magazine, etc. What I really like is that your $20 goes toward funding AKC inspections and to help fight anti-dog and anti-breeder legislation through out the country. | I enjoy having Gatsby registered it gives piece of mind. When Gatsby's sire died of kidney failure I was able to look at his pedigree and with minimal research find and call the breeders of his line on his sires side, and ask about kidney trouble that may have developed later in life and not been passed along to the buyers. I also like that my money goes to help fund things like dog shows and investigations and even a few charities. Also this may seem shallow but I never had a pure breed dog before and it makes me feel special to have those papers

I agree! I wouldn't register with any other registry, because I believe that they are just "paper" registries, and their purpose is to mislead people. I had Joey's microchip number registered with the AKC and this is just one more bit of information that might help reunite us if I'm ever lost! I think the AKC can also keep breeders honest, many breeders say that their dogs are eligible, but when a pet owner tries to register them, they learn they are not eligible. A breeder should be able to give you a litter number. Also, many breeders don't register their dogs because they know they are more likely to be inspected if they have over a certain number of litters, and don't want to be inspected, but these routine unannounced inspections really do help dogs, and ensure that they are kept in a safe humane environment. Right now the AKC has way more breeders who are involved in their policies than pet owners, and I believe we need more pet owners involved. Seriously, the registration fee is worth it!
