| Is your Yorkie a good traveler? Mine sure isn't! He doesn't mind the crate at all and doesn't make a sound, but every time I take him in the car, even just to the vet, he will throw up. I took him on a 3 hour car trip this weekend and he threw up, just like I knew he would so no big deal. However....the entire weekend we were gone he had diarrhea. I brought water from home and his normal usual food so all I can think of was that he has a nervous stomach or something. We got home yesterday and he has been perfectly fine. He even acted fine on the trip, except for the diarrhea. He also had a bout of diarrhea about 2 weeks ago. Took him to the vet and he did not have Parvo and they also checked his stool and it was fine, so I don't think he is sick. Anyone else experience anything like this with their Yorkie? |

| Ahhh, poor thing. It very well could be anxiety. What about taking time to slowly introduce him back to the car. Make the car not moving a happy place, etc, then slowly increase it. If he's just getting car sick, maybe there is something like a natural doggie gravol that you can give to settle his tummy. I wouldn't know, I've been fortunate that Harley loves to travel. he's done 3-4 hour car rides and 2 hour plane rides successfully. Good luck

| Peanut and Megan (Moo-Moo) travel just fine but my Maddie Jo (Panda) gets nervous and drooly when she even thinks she has to get in the car. We have to use Benadryl for her when we travel and she still hides under the cushion in her bed...all you see for most of the trip is her nose. We've been taking them on short drives to get her used to the car and she was doing so well on her last trip...I decided to turn around and tell her she was doing great. But...when I turned and said "Maddie Jo, how ya doin'?" her reply was "Blek" and she puked all over her seat cover...my poor baby girl! Last edited by my2boyz; 01-18-2011 at 01:04 PM. |

| My yorkie, Addyson use to throw up everytime she was put in a vehicle. It did not matter if the trip was short or long. I tried several different things, but nothing worked. I finally purchased a pet car seat which hangs from the headrest in the back sit, which puts her high enough to be able to see out. I also put a milk carton up under the car seat so it would be completely stable. This alone did not work, she still threw up, but not as much. I started giving her some nutri-cal about thirty minutes before I put her in her car seat. This worked like a charm. She now travels 400 miles at one time without throwing up. She still will not completely relax, and she still pants most of the time, but she does not throw up. I still have my fingers crossed that one day she will relax and enjoy the ride. |

| It sounds like it is caused from stress/anxiety. Stress can upset their whole system. All of my furkids travel great except one. They will all just lay down and go to sleep and they really enjoy being in the car and they never get sick no matter how long the journey is and they stay very calm and relaxed. Now my one that doesn't do as good (Hershey) does get car sick no matter how short the distance. Just 5 minutes down the road and he would get sick. He didn't seem stressed as he would just lay there but in the end this is what was causing him to throw up. Anytime there is another dog traveling with him no matter how long the trip is he doesn't get sick. We took him and two others on a 13 hour trip and he didn't get sick once. Anytime he travels just by himself he gets sick. So he is stressed when he has to travel by himself but is relaxed when traveling with another dog. Kinda weird if you ask me but we have tested it out several times with the same results each time.

| It's not so much the throwing up that bothers me, but the fact that he had diarrhea the entire weekend we were gone. Then as soon as I get him back home he is fine! That was weird to me. |

| Bruce does not do well in a crate or carrier in the car. So we got him a lookout instead and he rides well in that. He is great in his carrier on flights under 6 hours, so long as I take him to the bathroom and let him out to pee on a pad like once. We once flew directly from Seattle to Amsterdam, which was 12 hours, and he got restless in his carrier but overall did well without sedation and just a few trips up to the bathroom.

| He's just a baby and you've had him just a little over a month. He may be experiencing motion sickness as well as the stress of the trip. He should outgrow it. It's not uncommon for them to throw up. The diarrhea is not that common for traveling. I would get him a puppy seat, so he'll be safe, too. Usually, they don't get sick, as long as they can see out. I hope things improve. If not, you might want to consider using Rescue Remedy for pets. It's completely natural.

| My don't really like car rides. Remy want to sit on my neck, Baily pants like a steam engine, Sammy does ok. I have a car seat for Remy-- buckle her in!! The other two I have hook ups to the seat belts (they are bigger). They act "crazy" when we make "pit" stops-- I keep the leashes on even in the car because I am so afraid one of them will "bolt" and in a strange place with traffic that would not be good.

| Adjusting to a new home is very difficult on puppies, then car rides on top of it all, to new places again can be very difficult on them, and yes, diarrhea is very much part of them being traumatized with so much to take in. Take things slow, go on short rides often, and maybe you be in the back with him while someone else drives, just to reassure him that it's ok.

| Rio from day one has been so stressed in any car ride, short or long. She shakes and pants but luckily she doesn't vomit. We tried her in the crate, on my lap, in a car seat - nothing works. We've found she is the least stressed inside her crate, so that's where we usually place her now. Bullet from day one has been easy breezy - he just lies down and takes a nap. He's fine outside of his crate but for safety reasons we keep him in his crate in the car as well. I think personality comes into play in so many situations - it's amazing how different every dog reacts to situations no matter how much you try to do the same thing with both.

| Fortunately my 2 have become good travelers. Hot Rod always has been but poor Maggie May threw up for the the entire first year we had her. Even for the 6 mile trip to the vet. You could just see her little face turn and sure enough, she would throw up. She's all better now as she discovered that if the looks out the window she's does fine. It's so funny she will stand on the side of her snoozer car seat to look out the windows.

| I am blessed that all six of mine travel well. We go to Dallas every other month which is an 11-12 hr car ride one way and all of them sleep almost all the way down and back with one stop. No motion sickness from anybody. And... the little ones hold their pee the whole way, it is amazing. I know I'm blessed, I've seen to many post about the throw ups, the drools and the all the other problems. I especially going in an RV. Then they really have a ball.
