| Worried about eating after getting spay My little Charm is getting spay on Friday. She's a little thing 3 lbs 4 oz to 8 oz depending on when she last ate. I have a hard time getting her to eat sometimes she will just turn her nose up and refuse anything including carrots, cheerios, boiled chicken and hamburger and rice, chicken baby food, yogurt, and cheese which are things she loves when she is hungry. When she doesn't eat I give her a dime size drop of nutra cal or she will vomit yellow bile and get shaky like she's cold. Sometime she will eat a few bites of food after that most of the time she won't but she does drink. I'm worried that she won't eat after the surgery and make herself sick. I free feed her RC. I am having the pre op blood work done. Last edited by lynnelily; 01-12-2011 at 02:42 PM. |

| If the vet is staffed 24/7, can they just keep her for an extra day for monitoring and extended IV fluid administration?

| It is an animal hospital so their is someone their 24/7. I don't want her to be hurting and frighten when she wakes up but I'd have them keep her is it will keep her safe. |

| Ally was only 3 lbs when she had her little surgery with 13 baby teeth removed. I knew she would have a few teeth removed so I purchased canned puppy food so it would make it easier for her to eat. She is a very picky eater and I am always monitoring how much she eats to make sure she is getting enough. Her older sister (13 year pek) is a picky eater also, so it was normal for me to monitor each. She recovered very quickly when we brought her home and she preferred her normal dry puppy food (well more of her older sister's dog food) than her canned food. I gave the canned food to my neighbor. I can't remember if I gave her the nutrical, but she really didn't have a problem. Just make sure you monitor your baby, just like you do now. They recover faster than we do. I almost had to hog-tie Tia when she had her surgery this past September. Her and Ally went wild! Crazy girls! Good luck and keep us posted. Hugs and kisses for a fast and easy recovery. |

| We pulverized dry food into a powder, mixed it with some broth and gave it to Dinky a few hours after he got home. We were warned that he might vomit, so we gave him about a half teaspoon first, then a little while later we gave him a bit more. He was definitely hungry. He was about 3.5 at the time. We did the same with his food the next day or day; after that, he was fine. |

| Most do just fine at home and usually not eating the first night is fine, but because she is small and you are concerned, it may be best. Even on a non surgery day, I'd be concerned about needing to give Nutrical. If it's not balanced with protein, it can be pretty unhealthy. It can cause her sugar to drop. I don't have any advice for you except try to get her to eat. Not really recommended after surgery, but have you ever just tried forcing it?

| My little 3.8 oz Elsy was spayed a few months back and didn't eat for 3 days but she did drink. She had two baby teeth removed at the same time so I'm not sure if that is why she seemed to be in so much pain or maybe it was due to her size but I have never had any of my yorkies appear to be in that much pain. I had to take her back the next morning to get a pain shot but she was much better by the next morning. I hope all goes well with your baby. Keep us informed. |
