| HELP! Is my yorkie puppy a mix or purebred?? Hey everyone, I just purchased my new puppy Romeo for christmas, he is 4 months and 6.5 lbs. His father is a purebred yorkie with papers, although the mother did not have papers and the breeder had claimed she was pure yorkie as well. The father weighed 10-11 lbs and the mother weighed 9-10 lbs. I saw both the mother and father before I bought Romeo and I absolutely am in love with my new puppy although I can't help but wonder if he is a purebred being that he has such a long body, and long nose just like his mother, which led me to believe he was a silky yorkie mix. I was also asked if he was a mix between a yorkie and maltese, which makes sense because of his droopy ears and wavey hair. Here are some pictures of Romeo and his mother, let me know what you think? (attatched is a picture of his mom and pictures of romeo are in my album on my profile!) |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hi, and welcome to Yorkietalk, I can't see your album, I wonder if you marked it "public" otherwise only "friends" can see it. My guess is that the mom is not pure yorkie, but I don't have any idea what she could be, very cute though. | It is hard to tell since so many breeders are breeding carelessly with no regard to the breed standard. I think the puppy is very cute but all yorkie or to breed standard -- ?????? Probably not. This is the sort of thing that happens when breeders decide the out-of-standard traits their dogs exhibit are "okay" and not a problem to a breeding program. "Too big, oh well. Coat not quite to standard in color, texture, or straightness, it will slide. Large ears, large nose -- maybe the pups will be smaller? Let's take a chance, cause we gotta make our money back, right?" Get a few of those "out-of-standard traits" in the same pup and it is hard to tell if they are pure bred or not. When you buy a dog that is not registered you are really taking your chances. If the mother was really a pure bred yorkie, wouldn't the breeder have regitered her and registered the puppies? There must have been some problem. Still, I understand about looking at a sweet little pup and bringing them home regardless. Love doesn't have a breed standard. This is why it is so important to pick your breeder BEFORE you look at their pups. Make sure you are finding one who is ethical and not a greeder. The problem that has really multiplied since yorkies have become so popular is that unscrupulous breeders have tried to jump on the wagon to fill their pocketbooks with no regard to bettering the breed or even meeting basic breed standards. This dam obviously should not be bred. She is far from the yorkie standard and I doubt that she is purebred. But since so many have continued to breed OUT OF STANDARD, she may be pure-but-poorly bred. This is the sort of thing that happens when we throw the standards out the window and undo the work of countless breeders who meticulously evaluated their dogs and bred only the very best examples of the breed to continue to improve lines and hopefully ensure litters of the future were as close to standard as possible. These unethical breeders of today are diluting the gene pool until we start finding all of these threads where members are questioning the parentage of their puppies. All you can do at this stage is help the problem by becoming an outspoken proponent of healthy breeding to breed standard, try to stop the breeding of unregistered dogs, and by all means NEUTER your Romeo to stop the spread of out-of-standard pups. Pls do not worry -- Romeo will probably be a WONDERFUL pet. He may be a lot larger, may not even look completely yorkie but I bet you will love him just as much! I think the yorkie personality shines through most of the time! I still miss my first little yorkie Maggie -- an out-of-standard pup that I spayed as soon as I determined she should not be bred. She was still the sweetest and most loving dog possible -- worth as much in my heart as any show dog! But, I did not want to contribute to the problem of out-of-standard dogs. I still wanted a yorkie that looked all yorkie and I have two of them now from a breeder that refuses to just mate any two dogs to make money. I love all the pups equally but I don't like all the breeding practices equally!

| Oh, Congratulations with your new puppy!! Do you have a picture of the dad? and of the puppy ? I would think the mom would be a mix between yorkie/silky terrier, yorkie/westie or silky terrier/westie, she reminds me so much of both silky and westie. Her face is nothing like a yorkie face, way too different, yorkies have much shorter ears, smaller ears and more ''cat like'' ears. But a cute dog though!
