| Woman at a rescue made me cry. So I told my brother and sister that they could have a dog but we keep not finding the right dog for us however we have decided that we need a dog that is between 5-10 lbs and 4 years and under because Gatsby is 6 lbs and 2 years old and we want them close so we dont have to worry about playing and such. I have no preference for sex or breed and am even willing to drive out of state for a dog i THINK might be a good match to meet it and what not. I called up our local toy breed and puppy-mill rescue and told her my criteria she told me I was selfish and only looking for a dog to sit in my lap and look pretty. when i told her it was for my kids she then called me irresponsible and told me that she would not give me a dog just so it can end up back in the rescue in 2 months. then when she looked over my application again she got mad when she seen i did not own my house (i have a legal document saying for all intents and purposes the house is mine for the next 4 years, the owner is moving to a condo. She would sell to me but i don't have the money for house this big in this neighborhood) she denied my application and hung up on me I was in tears I really thought because i did not want a puppy and a mix breed would be lovely Rescue would be great for us My kids are 11 and 17 very responsible and would do wonderful with a dog of there own I have a half acre fenced in back yard. no pool and a concrete gazebo I have 1500 saved up (okay the kids saved up about 900 i put in the rest) for a rehomeing fee and a first vet visit and all the things a new dog needs. I have already been pre-approved by my pet insurance to add another dog to my policy I have been setting the money aside in our monthly budget for flea & heart-worm preventative. (Gatsby is not on any because he dose not need it but a new dog might) grooming and food and treats. I had the kids evaluated by our vet and by a child psychologist to make sure they wear responsible in everyone's eyes and not just my own my vets (i have two a nutritionist and a regular vet) both wrote me glowing recommendations. What did I do wrong? Thanks for letting whine I'm just so confused.

| She's looking a bit foolish to me. And we wonder why too many dogs are in rescue??? I'd try again ... on her day off! Even though she's a bit 'off' today too!

| She sounds like a person who was judging you without even knowing you. That is not right. I hope you will find another rescue group to work with. You will give a wonderful home to another dog. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I'm so sorry that happened to you. Don't let her cast a shadow over your desire to rescue a dog. There are other organizations out there who would be THRILLED to have you.

| don't feel bad... she is the problem not you!! I was turned down by a local shih tuz rescue because I said I would put a puppy in a crate or xpen when I was not home. The lady who ran the rescue felt puppies should run free in the house.. (my daughters puppy chewed through a cord for her lap top... would have been a dead puppy if it had been plugged in!!) AS said before..... we wonder why so many dogs are not adopted??????????

How can you keep them safe when you are not home if you cannot confine them?

| I tried to get a rescue and was told that my husband and myself are too old because we are retired. We did not have any kids. We did not have a fenced in yard. We did not have another dog for it to play with, and the cost was $350.00. Well, we bought a Yorkie puppy from a local Dr. who raises them for not too much more. You are right about so many of these dogs still being in rescue because the people handling the situation are control freaks. |

| First of all, I think it's WONDERFUL that you are wanting to rescue!! Try not to let her get to you. Do you have an animal shelter in your area, as opposed to just the rescue group? Our humane society is literally overflowing with dogs/puppies right now. They have a ton of purebreds along with equally adorable mixes. Ours is a kill-shelter and if yours is the same, you would be saving a life by adopting. Be sure to post pictures when you find your new furkid. Tammy |

Thor's Human Donating Member | I'm glad you are not letting this woman discourage you from rescue. Is this rescue on Yelp? I'd post a review. Emphasize how nasty she was to you. Even if you WERE totally unsuitable, you should not have been treated like that. How are they ever going to adopt out their dogs?

| I don't think you did anything wrong! I would try a different rescue. Or go there in person and ask about adoption. loving owner of Vinny |

| Thanks everyone I'm gonna call again on Thursday (next day off) and see if I can get someone else. it was pointed out to me by a friend that no one wants to even see a difficult case right before time to go home and it was 4 when i called I'm gonna chalk it up to a poor tired woman desperate to get home.

| Wow -- sounds like this woman needs to get off her high-horse and start looking at what is actually important for the pups! Sounds like you will provide a very loving family environment for a new dog. I hope you find the perfect match at Adoption Day! All things happen for a reason, maybe the woman did not really have the dog that would be the right match for you anyway and he or she is waiting at Adoption Day for just the sort of family you provide! I do think there are a few rescues that are not looking at the whole picture and disqualify people based on their own particular preferences while ignoring so many positives a family can provide. On the other hand there are also a great many rescues giving their hearts to provide the best placements to benefit BOTH the dogs and humans that will combine for one happy family. It cannot be an easy job. Some are bound not to do it well but I applaud those that do! They make such a difference to these little ones that might not even have a life if they had not interceded. Hang in there -- you will find the right match!

| That is why I didn't rescue. They told me the same thing. When I tool my two in to get Santa pics they sked where I got them. I told them..."from a breeder" lol. I told them exactly why too. "You all wouldn't let me adopt because I don't have a fenced in yard, but I don't need one with them because I take them out for walks and to your dog park (our humane society has two on site) and they also come when called". The lady at the desk...whisperd to me..that she didn't know why they were so picky about that.
