| 15 month old in heat again after 2 months?? Hi all... Chloe is 15 months old and 3 lbs. She came in heat for the first time almost exactly at 1 year old. That was Oct, 20th 2010. This morning I noticed she is spotting.. I'm about ready to call the vet but thought I would check here first. Is this cause for concern ? |

| I have no experience with a dog in heat. Since you are not sure I would call the vet for reassurance. I'd be very worried about not having her spayed. She is so tiny and I would be worried sick about the idea of her every having a litter of puppies. Chloe's is just adorable~please keep her save and have her spayed. You just never know what might happen if she were to ever get out alone or if she were to get lost.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Get her to a vet. This could be a sign of pyometra, an uterine infection that left untreated could be deadly. This happened with a Maltese rescue I had (although she is 5 years old). Pearl had her heat cycle and a couple of months later started bleeding again. I had intended to spay her but right after her heat had family members here for vacation and just hadn't taken the time to follow through with her spay, a few weeks after her heat. Anyway, when she started bleeding again, took her to our vet. She (the vet) knew immediately it was most likely pyometra and she was right. Had her spayed that day, and no problems since.

| Yes get her to the vet or call. I've seen this in my husband's hunting dogs before. Hopefully it's nothing too serious and you can get her spayed. Good luck.

| Thanks so much for your input!! Ok.. I'm convinced to contact a vet but this is my concern with doing that. We are in MI 6 months and in FL 6 months. We are currently in Fl. The vet I have gone to down here is a fairly good size guy. At one point when I had her in last year for her shots we discussed having her spayed and he said he would prefer to wait until she was at least 2 years old. He also was concerned about her small size and his rather large hands. I have been looking through the phone book for Veterinary Hospitals.. I am also concerned about her being put under due to her size. I know this is not an ideal time to change Dr.'s but... Any advice is much appreciated.. Thanks |

| Just got back from a nearby vet hospital. They said she didn't seem to have an infection but recommended that she be spayed to be safe. As I mentioned in a message I posted earlier today on the General forum.. the vet that has given her most all her shots had expressed some apprehension about spaying her due to his large hands and her small body. That was last spring when we were just discussing the possibility. Having that conversation in the back of my mind.. I decided to go to the vet hospital instead. They gave me some antibiotics to start giving her.. they want to see her next Tuesday to make sure nothing else has come up and will at that time schedule her for surgery the following week. I asked about blood work as someone suggested which they did in house and said everything was normal. I remember reading sometime ago about problems with a certain type of anesthesia but can't remember what it was. I'll be researching that later. Bottom line is she will be neutered soon. Thanks to everyone who responded and if there is anything I should be aware of prior to the surgery please let me know. Blessings to you all.. |

| Glad to hear it isn't severe. The main things I was concerned with when spaying Lulu was doing the pre-op bloodwork, making sure they use the best anesthesia, & that they used an IV with fluids during surgery as well as using a warming table. I didn't know that IV fluids aren't commonly used during spays/neuters around here. My vet said she would recommend one for Lulu due to her size, but I was going to request one anyway. Good luck with it. I know how nerve racking it can be. Lulu was spayed Dec 7th & then had LP surgery Dec. 28th. I was a ball of nerves both times. ETA: this is a good read before surgery. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-protocol.html

| Glad to hear I'm not the only "ball of nerves" I'm not sure if I just imagined this or not but it seemed like about 30 seconds after I stepped into the examination room I really started feeling icky.. While the assistant was taking Chloe's temperature and I was trying to hold her still .. I started coughing .. and couldn't stop. It was like a tickle in my throat. Once they gave me some water.. I was able to regroup but felt nauseous and my headache was coming on strong. Woke up this morning feeling fine.. just a fluke I hope. I know the FB can pick up on our moods so I'm hoping it wont happen when I take her for the surgery. Gotta be cool... gotta be cool... gotta be cool |
