| advice, help, thanks I am getting a yorkshire terrier and i have researched for 5 months now. I was wondering what should i look for in a puppy in the litter. i know not a dominant one or fearful one or one who hunches pr scratches his ears but i mean when i bring him home what should i do? My previous labrador retreiver died and now i am looking for a new breed as my mother wanted a yorkshire terrier? |

| Check for dirty ears cause this could mean ear mites which could be expensive to treat. Make sure that there is no over or underbite cause this could lead to eating problems and may also mean the puppy is inbred and may have problems later..Check the conditions of the kennel or home that they are in.. Make sure that they are being kept clean and warm and that the breeder seems to care alot about them. Is she asks you alot of questions then that is a good sign..If she does not mention hypoglycemia then that is not a good sign...She should know about this and inform you of how to handle it..As for when you get the puppy home, I would suggest preparing a schedule for it and work on it religiously. I prefer crate training so that the puppy never gets used to going potty anywhere or anytime in the house..I put Tucker in the crate at night starting the first night. I put a bed, food, potty pad, toys and an alarm clock so he could hear the ticking.. I used the potty pad in the crate for about 3 weeks and then I took it out since I knew that he would not potty in his crate.. Now he is 15wks and he eats at 3 scheduled times per day. For the first 3 months atleast, the puppy should be free fed to prevent hypoglycemia. If you are going to train him/her to potty outside, then I would take him out every 30 minutes for a while until he starts to catch on..After the first week or so, it will all come naturally and you will know what to do..Make sure you have Nutrical on hand. The breeder should explain all that to you.. Good Luck! Hope this helps some. |
