| Night Time Barking My Yorkie Charlie (female) has a nasty habit of waking up at night then barking and growling. She is doing it 4-5 times a night. She sleeps in bed with me, but will bark and growl whether she is in bed or her crate. Sometimes it takes several minutes to calm her down. I think that she is barking in response to hearing a neighbor's dog bark outside. I hear the dog barking about 1/2 the time Charlie is up barking. No amount of saying No or trying to be nice about it seems to make a difference, she just keeps waking up and barking. She's a little over 1 year old and does bark otherwise unless she wants to play. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. The only suggestion I can think of is to have some kind of "white noise" so that Charlie doesn't hear the neighbor's dog or any other noise that triggers the barking. I sleep with a fan running on low to mask noise from outside. My bedroom isn't very "plush" and I have a vaulted ceiling, so there isn't a lot to deaden sound. You could also work to really tire out Charlie before bed. Play fetch or whatever she likes.

| My mom's maltipoo does this. He does it worse if he is not In his crate at night. He will bark, growl, and throw a fit if he hears the slightest creak in the house. I think I would try what was list above, a noise maker. Maybe one of those alarm clocks that makes the ocean or other sounds? Good luck

| Daisy does this too , but in our case we live in the country in a house almost 100 years old so she is most likely barking at the mouse she has been trying to catch.lol |

| Sure it's not a ghost? My cat use to just stare at a wall at night. At first I thought it was mice but it wasn't. To this day I think it was some kind of spirit. |

| I agree with Maximo. Tire-out Charlie before bedtime. On occasion, Tatiana does bark in the middle of night. She hears the neighbor's dog, or some harmless sound. I scoop her up, and comfort her, and she falls back asleep. Truthfully, I don't mind. I like her "warning" barks. |

| Ha-ha! I remember when Kacee was a puppy that I had hung a suit on a hanger on the door across the hall. I guess she woke up in the night and thought it was someone standing there. She was panic barking! Scared me to death for a little while! Another time she started barking in the middle of the night and I never knew what caused it, but that scared me, too! Welcome to YT. I would make sure the bed is not under windows and try something that makes a constant noise at night or even soft music turned down very low - if that wouldn't keep you awake, too.

| I had exactly the same problem with my younger one. I sleep with both my babies on my bed. Only my younger one did that. It's not easy to correct it. I never comfort her when she did that. I just said NO to her and never pet her. When she barked during the day because of some other dog barking I took her out when she could hear the other dog clearly and I told her NO. I pet her only when she was absolutely calm. It took me about six months!!! Now if she hears something during sleeping time she some times growls and looks at me. When I say NO she calms down and goes back to sleep. If you pet her at the time she is barking she will think that she is doing the right thing and she will keep barking. Just let her know that it's not right to bark and she will stop

| Well I played a whole lot with Charlie shortly before bed and then put a fan on to add some ambient noise. She didn't wake up once. Thanks for the advice! |

| I'm glad you and Charlie enjoyed a peaceful night of sleep, and I hope it continues to work for you.
