| Lots of neuter questions! Hi everyone, my Remy is 18 weeks old. How old should he be when he goes to get neutered? I have heard five months or six months. That seems so young to me I think I would feel more comfortable at 7-8 months. What kind of blood work should be done before the surgery? Thanks so much I am already nervous and he isn't even old enough yet ha ha |

As for the blood work. I would do what the vet suggests. It's natural to be anxious about it. But it is the best thing for him and for you. | |

| The vet should take some blood work before he goes in for his neuter just to make sure he's okay to go through with the procedure... I don't know what kind of blood work, but maybe someone will come one here later and know what ones to ask the vet about. As for age, I think most people try to do around 6 months or a little later. I personally wouldn't do it any earlier than 6 months and it would depend on the size of your dog. Chip was sick so often as a puppy that I didn't want to stress his body with anesthesia, so I waited until he was 9 months. He doesn't have any behavioral issues or anything, which is one thing people are concerned about with waiting to long. Smokey was already neutered at 6 months when we brought him home, so I don't know when he actually got neutered. It's really between you and your vet though as to deciding the age to get it done. You'll know what is best for your particular dog and your vet should be able to make recommendations and give advice based on your concerns.

| If you call to ask the price of neutering they should quote you for blood work in the price of the neuter, if not go somewhere else. These little guys can have issues and you not even know. Make sure they use gas anesthesia as this is the safest. Also make sure you get pain medicine, my little guy loved his pain medicine. Also get an E-Collar (cone of shame) as much as they make not like it its better then them licking the incision open. My little guy was feeling better just a couple days later, it's normal to be nervous but just make sure you have a good vet and they should take the best care of your little guy. |

| Check out this sticky in the health section. It includes info on preop bloodwork: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-protocol.html Timing of neuter depends on many factors including weight and development. If your vet wants to keep your pup overnight, check to make sure that the office is staffed overnight. Some places do not have anyone when the office is closed. |

| I had Gulliver done when he was 4 1/2 months. he was already nearly 5 pounds and did just fine. Only had to wear the cone for about four days and never needed the pain meds they sent us home with. now at almost 8 months he's still a squatter and hopefully (please please please) always will be. When we did the neuter our vet did a complete blood workup just like they do for dentals and their semiannual check ups. by the way, if you don't already have one, get one of Mom to Hot rod's kiss-e cones. they're awesome and sooooo much more comfortable for the babies than those plastic cones you get at the vets. Lots more stylish too. |

| Hot Rod was done at 6 1/2 months and he had his baby teeth out at the same time. He had not lifted his leg by this point. He's never marked inside and he squats when he uses the pad but does mark and lift his leg outside, constantly.

| Thanks so much everyone! At his last check-up he weighed 4.2 lbs at 17 weeks. I'm sure he would do fine at 6 months. My schnauzer was rehomed to us but he was fixed at 5 months. He is almost a year and never lifts his leg, yay! I want my yorkie to be the same way, hopefully . Thanks again for the advice I will be checking into the cone's and talking to my vet. |

| Zach was just neutered yesterday he's 8 months old and he weighs 6 1/2 lbs. He also had 2 baby teeth removed. He's fine no pain meds were needed. I was kind of surprised that he still had baby teeth but the vet said they wouldn't fall out by themselves anymore. Anyway bottom line, I was a wreck for the whole day and hadn't really slept good for a week. After Zach came home we both slept all night long and today we are both well rested. |

| Bennett was neutered at 6 months and he stayed over nite, he never touched his stitches, didnt need a cone or anything, the next day when I picked him up he acted like he never got fixed, really helped my nerves. |

| I have also heard that 6 months is a good time to have a puppy neutered. My vet says it's best also to wait until the puppy is at least 5 lbs (if they will get that big, of course). |
