Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Peeing in the night. Poppy is doing well with potty training and has not had an accident in the house for a good few weeks now. We crate her at night and when she is home alone and up until a week ago she was doing very well with this and had not pottied in her crate. She would sleep all through the night without crying to go outside for potty, But for the past week or so she has been crying to go potty 3-4 times in the night, she is 7 months old and should be able to hold it through the night am I right? because she used to. She has peed in her crate about 5 times (never pooped). She only has room for her bed in there so if she pees she would have to sit in it until I noticed and cleaned it up, which she can't be enjoying. I always let her out for potty just before she goes to bed and first thing in the morning, and I keep her out there until she does her business. I thought maybe she was drinking a lot of water in the night so I took her water bottle away last night hoping it would make a difference, but it didnt, she woke 3 times for potty. I thought maybe she has some sort of UTI but she isn't peeing in the crate through the day or when she is out of her crate, I let her out everytime she goes to the back door which is probably every half hour, but she dosn't pee every time sometimes she just plays. Do you have any thoughts on this?

| When you've gotta go, you've gotta go. I know. No help. If you have an x-pen, why not put her crate in there with a pad at the other end? The other thought I have is that I don't think you've had her spayed yet, have you? I was wondering if she may be going into heat? I like to have them dual-trained.

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | I used to have her in a pen with a pad at the other end when she was pad trained. Now that I am training her to go outside I took the pads away all together and started to crate her because I thought she might get confused. No she hasnt been spayed yet, my vet said 8 months old was a good age and she is 7 at the moment. Im still on the fence about it because Im terrified something will go wrong and I will loose her. Do you think this is a sign of her coming into heat?

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Thank you. I just thought maybe it would confuse her if she was allowed to potty indoors sometimes and not others? but if you have yours dual-trained it must be okay. Do they ever try to potty indoors through the day?

| No, never. You know yours better than I do though. They are all different, but dual-training is wonderful. I will say that. Something else - I would never take away access to water. Being able to drink enough and urinate frequently will help keep away uti's and bladder and kidney problems like stones, which yorkies seem to be prone to have.

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Okay so I have just rung the vets and the call was diverted to the emergency clinic because the branch I usually go to is only open 9-10am then 5-6pm for appointments and the rest of the day is emergencies only, so I spoke to a receptionist who Im not familiar with. Anyway she said that it may well be because she may be coming into heat (marking) but because she is only doing it at night she dosnt think so, she thinks it could be an infection and that they are easy to treat, she told me to either bring her in or get a pee sample from her and drop it off. But how am I suposed to get a pee sample from her? mission impossible. I think I will call again first thing tomorrow morning and hopefully speak to someone at the branch I usually go to and get her an appointment to see the vet, because I have no idea how I am suposed to get a pee sample from her. (Apart from squeezing her LOL Joke). Any ideas?

| If this is something new it might be worth a trip to the vet- or at least a call- they may just let you bring a urine sample in. This way you can rule out anything medical from the beginning. Sorry- I was posting at the same time as you! As far as the pee sample- you can try and get her to pee on the underside of a pee pad- the plastic side, so it will pool on top and not seep in- and then you can just fold the sides and pour the urine into a container- sorry hard to explain, lol- did that make sense? Its getting her to pee on the pad that will be difficult. Since we started training her to go outside she wont even look twice at a pee pad, I tried to get her to use them on bonfire night when we had lots of fireworks going off in the area and she was scared to go outside. But nope she wouldnt have it. I think I may have to take her in to the vets, but I will try the pad thing though. Thanks!

I think the easiest way is to take her into the vet. Can they detect a UTI without a pee sample? or how do they detect it when you take them into the vets?
