| What kind of coat? Can anyone tell me what kind of coat you think Bella has. It seems like she doesn't have as much hair as the rest of the yorkies here. She just turned 1 on December 1st. Her hair knots pretty fast and I can never get her hair to stay nice even after brushing or soft after a day from a bath. Looking back at pictures, I can't believe how much their coat changes in just a year. She doesn't even look like the same dog. lol |

| I'm just guessing from my own experience and from looking at your pictures. I think she's going to have a silky coat. My guess is that it will take another six months or so for her coat to fill in and become a little thicker. A good conditioner should help the coat stay nice, plus I have found silky coats do better when it is long or all the same length on the back. Of course, I'm just speaking for myself. She's certainly a pretty girl.

Thank you so much! I was leaning toward cotton but I had no clue. I couldn't find any pictures on the internet that compared. So glad I have this place to come to. I figured this was as full as her hair was going to be. Good to know it's still growing and filling out. Thanks again! | |

| She may have a modified coat... A mix between the two types of coat. It doesn't look to me like she has a cotton coat... My Khloe has a very thick, easily tangled cotton coat and it looks nothing like Bella's. Here is a picture of Khloe (the darker one) next to her silky coated brother Couver.

| My Lexi looks a lot like her too. She is also about the same age. I've been wondering myself if her coat was going to thicken up some. Her picture is of the smaller dog in my profile pics. Cathy

| I would say she is cotton. If you look at the second picture you will see that her eyes are green. this is a sign that she is cotton. Maria |

| I would also have to say that having one silky and one cotton Yorkie, the cotton hair takes more time to grow that the silky one. Look at the pictures bellow. My first one with the red bow is silky and and my second one with the pink bow is cotton. I think that you will be able do see the difference. Maria |

| actually, if the eyes reflect green they tend to be silky and if they reflect red, they are cotton

The truer test is the reflection of light off the coat and cool to the touch. Your 2nd pick reflects light, and could mean the dog has a modified coat. Modified coats grow at a faster rate.

| I think Bella looks silky. She is a darling Our first Yorkie Baby had a silky coat and Bella's coat looks quite similar. Baby's hair never got very thick compared to Sophie's who has a thicker soft coat yet she doesn't tangle very easily. I was told Sophie has a modified coat.

| I agree that she looks most like a silky coat. The cottony coats are normally very thick. When out in the sunlight the silky coat will reflect light as Mardelin explained. The cotton coat will sometimes have almost a brownish cast to it and look more dull. You have the green eye shine for a silky coat, the thinner coat, it seems to lay down instead of puffing up -- all signs of silk. She does look a little sparse in the coat department, not too unusual for a year old -- it should thicken up some over the next 6 months. But make sure she has a premium food, and you might want to take q look at some supplements like: Missing Link, Seameal, or make your own with the famous Peanut Butter Balls recipe for "growing hair on a doorknob:" Lowchens of Australia ~ Growing hair on a doorknob!
