Yorkie Yakker | Help with New Yorkie Mom and Puppies My new mom of five puppies who will be two weeks tomorrow is digging - just like she used to before she gave birth and as if she were nesting. Is this common? To me, at least her instincts have been amazing and predictable. I watch her several times a day clean her puppies, but today, there was puppy poop in the bed. Mommy has also been siting outside the bed looking in. The puppies are gaining, growing, and mommy is eating voraciously, but I am concerned because within just a few days all five puppies combined will weigh as much as mom. Should I step up with even more food for mom, should I consider taking a load off and start bottle feeding - should I call my vet? Is this normal? |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I would consult your vet but will let you know what I have seen and done with mine. I have some bitches dig like that not sure why. I just thought they were getting comfortable. They are 2 weeks old it's normal for mom to want away. She needs to be feed 5-6 times a day now. I give mine eggs, cottage cheese, a couple spoons of wet food mixed with dry, boiled chicken and rice. Anything they like to give the extra. Plus leaving her dry kibble for her out all the time. She needs plenty of water too. I would have her on a calcium supplement also with that big of litter. Also make sure the pups don't have diarrhea. They can dehydrate really fast.

Yorkie Yakker | Thank you . I feed her extra throughout the day with Iams puppy food - chicken and rice, keep her dry food filled, as well as give her milk supplement, chicken broth, and french vanilla ice cream before bed. I will make her extra chicken and try cottage cheese - How do you prepare the egg? Bev |

She definately needs the puppy food but a premium food would be better than IAMS. For calcium supplement, ask the vet for sure, but I gave mine a 1/2 Tums a day. I also had a liquid calcium aupplement that the vet gave me already drawn in syringes to use for the first week.
