Senior Yorkie Talker | Grrrr..... Bentley is almost 8 months now. He weighs about 3 pounds. When I am out and about people always ask me if he is a "teacup". Now, I know there is no such thing so I say no. Then they look at me like I'm crazy and proceed to explain to me why he is actually considered that. He is just a small guy is what I tell them. Not really a question I guess. Just me being annoyed. He is healthy and I certainly didn't get him for his weight. Id love him at 100 pounds. I hate when people ask me that bc I want to say there's no such thing but I'm sure Id sound rude. I know I'm not the only only one that this happens to daily. So, what do you guys tell these people? I want to tell them something bc I don't want them to not be informed then go purchase a sick little one bc they were told it was a "teacup". Which I have seen happen so many times. |

| Sorry i don't have anything to say about this situation in particular but i thought i would share my frustrations with you as they are similar. I have the problem of people coming up to us and either having no idea that Denali is a yorkie asking questions like "oh what kind of dog is that? Oh it doesn't look like a yorkie, is he mixed?" etc. or they go "omg is that a yorkie? Why is he so big?!" Now my little Denali is not a big boy by any means- he only weighs 5.8lbs so he is by far within the standards but because he is not the tiny 2lb "teacup" yorkie that people are obsessed with he is for some reason huge.. It can be so annoying, so when this happens i tend to respond with "yes he is a pure bred yorkie and his weight is perfectly within the standard. Come on Denali let's go." Some people are just ignorant but what can you do?

| Ye sorry I can't sympathies with your problem either, but I love your response-my issue is the opposite. My Elvis is 9 lbs...I get asked what he's mixed with-people realize he's a Yorkie but maybe partially because he's parti, but he's not an extreme he's just tri-toned, I think ppl just see his size and assume he's mixed I'm starting to call him a "teapot" just to be sarcastic with the ppl who assume all Yorkies should be the "teacup" size |

| Oh and i forgot to add a realllllllly funny story, or at least i found it to be hilarious- We had Denali at Petsmart one day and were just walking around when some lady walks by carrying this tiny little thing that had just been groomed. She stopped by us and asked what breed of dog Denali was. I smiled and told her that Denali was a yorkie. This lady looks at me and goes "that is a yorkie? He can't be pure bred. He is HUGE and looks nothing like a yorkie." I don't even know how to describe the expression that was on my face because as this lady was talking i realized that she herself was too holding a yorkie, except her yorkie could not have weighed more than two pounds, looked very sickly, not in the least bit happy, and had the thinnest wiriest looking hair I've ever seen. I was shocked because this lady was clearly delirious! I looked at her and said "My dog is very much so a pure bred yorkie and he is not huge in the least bit, in fact, the standard says that a yorkie should be between 4 and 7lbs so those tiny sickly puppies that puppy mills like to breed and sell to people are further from the standard than my yorkie. My dog is happy and healthy and i would rather have him than any of those sick tiny pups." And then i walked away. I could not believe that this woman was holding a yorkie in her arms and could not even tell that my Denali was a yorkie. I am assuming that it must be because people have been brainwashed that only dogs under 3lbs can be considered pure bred. This lady made me so mad i wanted so bad to be like oh my what is that you are holding? That can't possibly be a dog, it barely has any hair and is so tiny? It must be hamster or something right? But i couldn't stand to talk to this lady any longer and she really wasn't worth it.

I don't think they do it to be unkind so I just say "Yorkies don't actually have teacups but mine are good sized." I have never had anyone say anything rude at all about mine. I did have a lady tell me "she" had a teacup at home which was a lot smaller than mine. I just smiled and said "I love them all sizes." I don't have any size conflict so I guess I don't take anything people say personal. Mine are the size they are supposed to be (except for a pound of excess we need to get off chubby Ben). You just can't worry when the uneducated say things about size. Actually the standard says up to 7 pounds -- there is no minimum. So even those little tinies are in standard size wise. I really do love them all sizes!

But on the serious side, there really is not point trying to fight people that don't know any better. Only get upset with Greeders who use the term teacup to gain profit, not at the ignorant public...if it's something they see promoted on the regular they won't know any better. | |

| My first Yorkie is 5 lbs and my second one is 3 lbs. I didn't know how big they would get and I thought that 5 lbs is too small, so when my little one stoped growing I was a bit disappointed. I never wanted Yorkies because of their size but because of their character. Smaller ones tend to have many health issues and that's very frustrating for a puppy you love. When I get ready for a third one I will defenately try to find a bigger one. And as far as people are concearned, just have fun with them. Tell something like I own the worlds bigger Yorkie, or my baby will make it to the Guinnes book of records. Maria |

| My former dog, Willie, was 2lbs, I used to prey everyday for him to grow more, but he didn't. He was so tiny, I could carry him in my purse. People used to tell me how lucky I was for having such a tiny dog. I never felt lucky for that. I never felt happy when I was with him in the hospital, with all the treatments, he was always sick. And most of all I didn’t feel like the day he was killed by my neighbour dog... I thought I would never buy another yorkie again, but... I did it. And now I am so happy to have my fatty Bruno and my less-fatty Pixie. Bruno is 10lb and Pixie is 5lb, and I still hope they will grow a little bit more J Now I have 2 dogs that are very healthy and never had any health problems, and for me that’s most important.

My Thomas weighs 15 pounds...My favorite comment once was, 'he looks like a big yorkie'!

| Yeah, Harley hasn't been out and about too much lately cause I've been busy, but I hear it all the time too. he's 3.3lbs he's full grown, and when you look at his sibblings his sister finished at 5.5lbs He was not bred to be that tiny, he just was... and it makes me mad when people assume he's bred to be tiny and unhealthy, cause my breeder is amazing!. I would LOVE to snap back, but truth be told there are too many ignorant they just don't understand, it is our duty to educate them. Mind you when I start talking standards with people they usually tune me out.

| Holy Yorkie! I thought Elvis was the largest ever until I met someone down at the two plaza for the Halloween parade (she ws dressed as Dorothy her husband as the Scarecrow and of course they had a Todo-their kids were off hiding from walking with them) anyways they had a 12lb-er! Not over weight just absoultly large he was actually kept by his breeder until he kept growing (similar to how I got Elvie-roo) and later rehomed with them...the wife wanted a Yorkie and the husband felt they were too small didn't like "kick-me-accidentally-while-walking-dogs", well she got her Yorkie and considering how proud her husband was to have and show off the largest Yorkie anyone had ever seen here, it seems they both got what they wanted there....I won't mention next time I see them about your 15lb-er-husband might be crushed LOL! |

| Mine weigh 4 and 5 pounds and I get the teacup thing a lot. After awhile I just got used to it- I usually just say "they are pretty average for a yorkie" or something like that. Its easiest and usually gets me back on my way the quickest. |
