Unhappy Trusting a Buyer...Scams

I'm curious to know, what 'red flags' others have come across
when a potential buyer contacts them about an adult dog or
puppy they have for sale?
I was contacted yesterday to release one of my girls to a
buyer in FL. While she did leave a late night message on my cell
(lovely British accent BTW...), we've not yet spoken personally.
She's merely gathered info via two short emails and an ad I'd placed.
She informed me this was meant to be because their Yorkie had
just passed away from heart failure when she saw my ad. And,
that her husband had fallen in love with the photo of my girl. I
didn't have the chance to get back to her right away, so she
sent several frantic emails in succession.
But, this is what got me ~ She'd already contacted her
'personal courier' and had a flight picked out. Oh really!? I was told
to expect her courier to be at my home this Wednesday to get my
dog and that she would be handing me a check from Bank of
America. What the heck?? I had not even agreed to anything, nor
did we have a real discussion on important details! DA NERVE!
I said NO thank you and best wishes in your search. So today's
email was rather long winded, with attempts to calm any fears I
may have about our transaction. What transaction? Since when
does NO not mean NO?
I don't like being cynical and second guessing people's intentions,
but for now will trust the vibes I'm getting....sigh. It's gonna be
a long afternoon, judging from the 8 phone messages she's left.

I am not a breeder- but I have heard this same story before (not sure if it was here, or on another forum) - so it must be a pretty common scam.

SCAM SCAM SCAM !!!!!!!! I was selling some horses, and got word for word the same e-mail several times for 4 horses I had for sale!

Do not open anything from these people, it breeds viruses too!!!!!!!!! had to have my computer wiped.

SCAM SCAM SCAM....

If you meet the person, you're ok, but the second I replied to one of these and said I only sell with personal appointments they left me alone.

Thanks guys and gals...yes, the scammer seems to think she is
clever. I just checked my phone records and one of the numbers
she uses happens to be on my blocked list from 2 months ago.
Hhmmm, imagine that!
I have only raised 2 Yorkie litters in my life. I care a great deal
for these little furballs and only meet with prospective adopters
in my home. I've resisted shipping them so far.
#1. I want the adopter to see where the babies are raised
#2. I want people to meet the Dam and Sire
#3. I also want folks to meet our family, to chat a bit and to
see if they are a good match for a particular pup's personality
Yes, I have turned people away, but with a very good
explanation/reason why. Most of the time they agree, sometimes
they are mean.

Well, you're smarter than most, some have accepted a check and deposited it, only to find out months later that it's no good. I love all your rules on puppy placement, I hope you never bend these rules, just to sell a dog. An informed puppy buyer wants to see the sire and dam, and also the home in which the puppies are raised. You sound like the type of breeder who is placing a pup, not selling a dog. By the way, they say that greedy people are usually the ones who get caught in scams, as the victims!

I don't ship for the reasons you have listed, I keep my dogs and puppies local unless it is someone I know who doesn't live in my area.
I also reserve the right to refuse a sale. Just because someone has come out to see puppies doesn't mean I will sell them one. They don't come out to see a puppy either unless they have passed my initial telephone interview.

My breeder really questioned me as to why I was dead-set on a female. I wanted a girl because Ringo seemed to only get along with female dogs; he was too territorial and aggressive with another male.

But I could tell she was being careful that I wasn't looking for a dog to breed.

I think she felt better after she called my vet and confirmed that Ringo had been neutered.

I'm glad she was suspicious!

Yes...thank you...Exactly!!! I don't like it when I get pressured by people. They see a 'darn cute little creature', but not
the responsibilities involved. What is the rush anyway? Let's talk a bit. Let's find out why you've chosen a toy breed.
I always ask if visitors have any questions for me about Yorkies...if not, then I go into 'education mode'. LOL

[QUOTE=Ringo1;3348738]I think she felt better after she called my vet... QUOTE]

I debated on whether or not I should be asking people for their vet's contact information, or to have a questionaire for them to fill out.
My thinking was, it might seem somehow intrusive or too nosy...but I'm glad I got over this way of thought. If someone is seriously
considering adopting, filling out a form or answering a few questions won't be a big deal. It should make a person stop and think about
why they are adopting. Besides asking for their vet's info, I ask about their home and if they have a landlord, other pets, number of
children and their ages...that sort of thing.

I received a call from a relay service and someone who was hearing impaired tonight. They asked for additional pictures, the condition of the puppy and what was my asking price. It was difficult to talk as our conversation was translated, etc. Feeling that I wanted to give the person the benefit of the doubt, and not discriminate against them, I composed a very detailed email, with pictures and also asked for information regarding their family, etc. What I got back was the same exact email that Gloria wrote about re: Puppy Scams in another thread. Basically wants to send me my price, plus $100 for reserving and agreeing to cash the check and send the remaining amount to Western Union, etc., etc. I am so aggravated that these people are masquerading as hearing impaired folks and trying to scam other's not only of their puppies, but financially ! I knew once I got her response email, it was a scam. The other thing that really bothers me is they have my phone number, as well as my email address. I'm worried they could hack into my IP address / computer and get other valuable information. I was concerned re: using the Puppy Application feeling that folks may find it too intrusive, but after this.... I am using it !

My husband and I have been married for 25 years, and in that time we have owned 3 dogs. Each one of our pets, have been purchased from breeders outside of our state, but still within driving distance. When I would call to inquire, I had as many questions for the breeder as the breeder had for me. We were always approved buyers. I see a huge red flag, when someone wants to buy one of my puppy's, but has no questions. Not happening, and I will not take anymore relay phone calls. We have to meet in person, at my home. I'm so upset..., and also worried this scammer has personal information such as my phone number / email address. I do plan to report this incident to Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) | Internet Crime Schemes . I hope this stops as it's a horrible injustice to hearing impaired individuals.

Sorry to ask, but what do these people want?
Do they get the puppy for free and then resell it?
I know that breeders usually get to know people that are interested in a puppy and you get to visit a breeder for quite some time before you actually get the puppy home.
I can't imagine getting a puppy from a breeder without getting to know him, meet the puppy's parents and see their living conditions.
And if I contacted a breeder that was willing to send me a puppy just by a phone call or a mail I would get suspicious that he wouldn't want me to visit him. Filling a questioner would definitely make me feel more reassured that I'm dealing with someone that really loves and cares about the puppies.
I've been a member of YT for almost half a year and I see that everybody around here is crazy about their pupps. Just as I am. And I love it.
I wouldn't expect anything less from a breeder

I would tell her is she calls again your gonna turn her in for harrassment. I dont know if this is a scam or someone who really wants a puppy that is not used to being told no but either way you dont wat her to have your pup and there is no reason to put up with the continuing phone calls

Exactly! She finally gave up...but gosh, it was annoying. Sort of like hearing a whining child saying "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy...." a millions times.
