| cold weather blues brady was totally fine with walking, playing, peeing, and pooping outside until just recently when the weather dipped into the 20s and 30s. now he can't stand to be outside at all and frantically pulls to try to go back home. this happens even when i dress him in 2 layers - a sweater and fleece jacket. he just keeps shivering and trying to go home. is this normal? is it because he's still young (6 months)? i'm just worried he won't get enough exercise indoors, esp since i live in an apt. now, i've just been taking him out into the hallways just to run around. please let me know if you've experienced this w/ your puppy |

| Some yorkies dont like cold or bad weather I know my Jewels doesnt. I think walks are good for them but not necessary. Small breeds can get enough excersise inside

| I am having the same problem with mine, Mandie. She is 2 years old and we just recently moved from Florida to South Carolina and the weather here is getting cold, low 30s at night sometimes only getting into the low 50s during the day. She isn't used to that. We also live in an apartment, so I take her down to go the bathroom and as soon as she goes she is pulling on her leash to come back in. We have another dog that loves the colder weather and its hard to take both of them out at the same time when Mandie is constantly pulling to come back in. Just tonight, my sister was going to take her out and she jumped up beside me and started shaking, like she was too scared to go out, and wouldnt go out. I dont know what to do..?

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Izzy hates the cold... and she is going to really hate the weather coming up here in michigan... I'm talking down to 17 degrees...I have pee pads in the hall way for when she won't go out side..but she has been doing ok for now... as for exercise...you can throw a ball or other toys she like and play with her.. She should be fine.

| Neither of mine mind the cold. Therefore, it's coats on coats off a million times a day-every bird, every squirrel, every leaf. They also like to play in the snow and come in with their coats filled with snow that needs to be toweled and hair dryered off 8 to 10 times a day (I'm not looking forward to snow). They are more work than my three children were.

| Ziva hated the cold weather last year (7 months) her fine puppy coat wasn't enough to keep her warm. I even kept her water warmed. She would do anything to not step on the cold tile floors! maybe she'll do better this year! |

| I think if you make positive associations with the cold they can learn to love it or at least tolerate it. Obviously some dogs are going to like it more than others, or dislike it, etc. But I think getting outside in the winter is still important even if you don't do it as much. Jackson can deal with the cold, it's the wind that bothers him and I know here in the Baltimore area, it's been cold AND windy making it feel like it's only 20 degrees when it's really, like, 35! So maybe that's why your little guy has been wanting to go back inside? But I would just keep 'em moving. My friends little guy Bandit is naturally really skinny and only 4lbs and when he's just standing there... he's freezing. But when we go on a walk, he's absolutely fine because he's moving. Anything that Brady likes... a specific toy, or a good treat? Bring it outside with you every time and play, etc... he will learn to tolerate it esp. if bundled up. I always layer Jackson on those super cold days too.

Because of the cold wind, I'm thinking about making both the boys wear Doggles. Shouldn't take more than an hour to get ready to go out: band hair, put on coats and harnesses, put on boots..... To the OP, last winter, when my little waif Teddy was still under 6 pounds, he didn't have the endurance to stay outside long in the cold. We kept his walks shorter, 15-20 minutes tops. | |

| Zach loves the cold weather. He can stay outside for hours if I let him. So far he's wearing a fleece jacket but I have a heavier jacket for when it really gets cold. He really doesn't like to wear clothing and a number of times he's come in without his jacket. I don't know how he gets out of it but I have a feeling one of his sisters are pulling it off him. |

♥Tiny Tia my Furbaby♥ Donating Member | Tia doesn't like the cold much either even with her jumper and coat on however she makes the effort to get to the field and then warms up by running around after her ball and then jumps in her carry bag for the ride home,

| Dinky is not crazy about the cold. We've had some back tracking in potty issues. We offer him a potty pad in the garage on the way in and out, but so far he is not taking the hint. My hubby keeps a path cleared for him, and we found a great hooded fleece lined coat that goes on easily with velcro and is cut so he can potty without getting it wet. It seems to us that he likes the coat! He's adorable in it. The hood is too cute. Another problem is that it is just too cold for him to walk outside, and we walk 2 miles every day. It's been so cold and windy that we ourselves are using the treadmill. We are training him on that. It's slow going, but we have to do it. He is used to working off that terrier terror on his walks. I throw squeaky toys down the hall over and over and over, but that doesn't calm him down the way the walks do. The good news is that I retire in June and we plan to move to a warmer climate. If all goes well, next winter will be easier to manage. |

| Sandy doesn't like cold weather that much. We had so much snow here over the past week. When it's snowing heavily or too cold outside, I don't walk him. I let him run on the balcony but he's back to the apartment 30secs later. |

| Duke is fine with the cold as we are in North Jersey but it's been way too cold here too. I haven't taken him out this week but he is wee wee pad trained. I use a few small tennis balls and throw it around the apartment for him to run. We do this nightly so he can get some exercise and get his energy out. I think running in the hallway is a good idea if you can do that, for some exercise. Let's hope for a not so cold winter.
