Default Teapot, Teacup, and NOW Teaspoon

I was just looking around the web and now people are advertising small yorkies as 'Teaspoons'. Is this the new thing?

Yorkie - "Teaspoon" Female - $2,650
Yorkie - AKC "Almost a Teaspoon" Female - $1800

That sort of advertising just makes me mad. Half the time the pups they are advertising that way are on the large side or at least turn out to be. The other half are breeding tiny females putting them in terrible danger each time. Too bd they can't have a law to make it dog abuse to breed those tiny girls!

I had to google the site to see the "teaspoon" yorkies. I will follow your lead and not list the link just so I won't give her any unintended advertising. She is calling those she THINKS will be 2.5 pounds and less a teaspoon. Her site is all about size! Can't count all the times she refers to their size! The one she is now selling as a teaspoon is 2 pounds 1 ounce at 5 months old -- that actually charts much closer to 3 pounds than 2.5 but it is still just a huge GUESStimate. The pup could just as well have a growth spurt and wind up being the largest of the litter. To pay almost $3000 for that pup would be insane. Look at her male, she is so proud of -- no way is he within yorkie standards. He is cute -- I think they all are -- but breeding quality -- no way! Color, face shape, body shape and proportions -- all off. She uses him for one reason, to try for the smaller pups. Then she actually has the audacity to mention show potentials on her site! Really? I don't think so.

It is fine to want a small yorkie. But better to get one that just happens to be on the small side, from a good ethical breeder who breeds for the standard and not just to see how small of pups they can make.

She mentions a "replacement" guarantee for genetic faults up to a year. Breeders know that is like no warranty at all. Who is going to want to trade in their dog after they have bonded and fallen in love with them. How about a life time genetic guarantee that offers to help with the actual vet expenses? But hey, they come with a puppy pack and a blankie! Anything for a buck! Sad.

Maybe I looked at the wrong site, but they claim not to breed females under 5 pounds and they note the terms used "teacup/teaspoon" is descriptive only (which is all it ever was...they could have said "small/extra small" - splitting hairs).
The male who they claim is so small looks pretty good to me. I'm thinking I may not have went to the site everyone is referring to, but I googled "teaspoon yorkies"
I"ll look at it again and see what I missed.

It's disgusting to use a 3+ pound yorkie to breed!

No I think you are looking at the right site but she ACTUALLY says MOST of her breeding females are over 5 pounds and then she states that she does not breed females under 3.4 pounds.

No respectable breeder use terms like teacup and teaspoon. She uses the size as her MAIN sales tool. She uses the Yorkie growth chart as a sales ploy instead of the guess-timate that it really is. Every puppy has a projected weight listed for it. There is no way you can tell how much all of these 6 week - 5 month old pups will weigh. They could easily have a growth spurt and be well over projections. The importance being put on size is what is the biggest red flag. Look at how many times you find the words teacup and teaspoon on a page! Crazy! And speaking of 6 week old pups -- I think she is selling them at that age. There is nothing on there that I saw about them being available in the future -- they are for sale now!

The male is cute, but if you understand the Yorkshire standard, you can easily see he in no way meets it. His little fox-like face is not to standard, his reddish coloring while pretty is not to standard, his hair does not look like it lays like silky hair to me in the one picture where you can see more of his side. He has short, cobby legs -- something she is using as a sales benefit but which is NOT in yorkie standard. His proportions are off. You don't just look for a male that will help provide tiny puppies -- you also want the male AND female to be the best reprsentatives of the breed you can find. You can take a dog with a small deviation from standard and try to find a complimentary mate to help compensate for the shortcoming. My male (in my profile pic) had larger ears than I thought he should (although he seems to keep growing into them better) so I got a female with tiny ears, I thought were perfect. All the pups had perfect ears. But when a male is as far off the standard as this one is -- there is no complimentary female that can compensate for all that. He's not the only one either -- they just do not look like breeding Yorkies to me. I think any of the show folks or the ethical breeders here will agree.

Boy, you guys went further than I did. I looked at the heading, it made me mad, and I went on. I just can't understand why all these people are jeopardizing these little 3 lb babies to make a buck! As far as having a growth spurt...Tia is a perfect example. She was only about 8 oz at 10 weeks when I got her. She is now over 5 lbs. As soon as I got her, she started growing. I don't know what they did to keep her that small. She was better off in my care than theirs.

CLs ad on Treasure Coast has two little girl pups that have a 2 lb momma and 4 lb pappa. Everyone keeps flagging and now they are having a big conflict over the whole thing. That poor 2 lb baby. I don't see how she made it thru the whole thing!!!! I'm looking at a 7 lb momma on the Jacksonville site though. I feel sorry for her because the man that has her is just getting rid of her because she is pregnant. He says that a 3.5 lb male yorkie got her, but you never know. I think he is asking $600. My fear is that she dies in my care because the man lied to me and bred her with something much bigger. I just can't deal with that right now. Why do I keep looking at this stuff???????

I feel exactly the same way about my 9 pounder. People are sick what more can we say. I suddenly am concern I paid too much though reading the reaction of people over a $2,500 price tag...and my Elvis came to me in bad shape and with cluster seizures. Maybe it was just because he was a parti...anywho off topic, the size issues and downsizing are craziness there's a reason the AKC created breed standards for dogs here. The EKC actually has larger standards than we do and they govern the very place Yorkie's were "created"
was this the site... http://www.tinyyorkieblessings.com ?

History of the Teacup Yorkie | eHow.com

This JUNK annoys me! Misinformation (as in everything in this article is total nonsense) is so hard to combat!

This why Yorkietalk & reputable breeders, exhibitors having web sites is so important!

They are just gonna breed them smaller and smaller as long as our society has a fascination with small. If there werent any money to be made by doing it they wouldnt be
