| My Yorkies are being dethroned!!!! My 2 Yorkies love to sit along the back of the couch and look out the bay window to see what's going on. We have always allowed it because they enjoy it so much. But this SAT we are getting 2 new couches, and they will not be allowed to sit on the top of the cushions any more. I'm torn between letting them have their few days on their throne... or dethrone them now and get them ready for the new rule! They will still be allowed on the couches, just not along the top. Any thoughts???

| You surely are a mean mommie! I couldn't do it myself. Both of mine have taken over that position. When I get a new couch, I go buy beautiful throws and let her be happy. I did the same with Muffin. I figured if they could not see out except at the patio doors, then there really wouldn't be much to see. That's why I didn't mind. I'm a softie.

| Well the cushions of my old couch are all smushed down from them sitting up there... and they have my bed in front of two large windows they can go on, and also a 9 foot slider they can look out. they also have a couch in my dinning room they can look out. We have tons of windows so i dont feel badly at all!!!! They are so spoiled!

| Mine can't see over the fence in my family room from the couch, so she only has the patio doors in there and the couch in the living room. All of the other windows are too high. I can really see you enforcing this rule! Every time you leave the room, they are going to sneak in there and hop up!

I would not give them any time to "adjust", because they are not going to understand the concept. Just stop allowing them on the top of the couch. I do think this is a pretty specific rule, and it's probably going to confuse them. Like, "not on the couch at all" is one thing, but "you can't go on specific parts of the couch" might be tough to convey.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | We got a new sofa & loveseat last spring. The old set had a "back" to it, it was Baxter and Cooper's favorite place to nap. The new set has an extremly low, narrow back, with 2 big plump pillows making up the back of each couch. I am a mean momma, I got such giggles watching them jump to the top of the new sofas, and then slide back off, but somehow they have figured out how to smoosh the tops of the pillows down to lie there. I guess my Yorkies are Kings here, and we are the peasants! LOL. Hubby does not let them eat treats on the furniture, because we have microfiber and the drool leaves marks. But when he is not here, I let them do it and just wipe up after them, or throw down one of their blankets for them. I think it will be hard to "undo" their habits!!! Yorkies are stubborn! |

| LOL -- that was my first thought too! I actually was going to try to keep mine off the backs of the new furniture last time too. They had dented in the tops of my old set and I thought I wanted to keep that from happening. I couldn't do it. They got up there all the time and it was a constant battle of trying to redirect them to another place or activity only to find them back on their "perch" a few minutes later. They were just so confused. You could see it in the way they cocked their little heads at me like -- What's the matter mom, have you lost your mind? We're being good, just sitting where we always sit." Finally, I threw in the towel and I found some nice throws that match perfect. I put them across the backs of the couch and chair and wash them regularly, fluffing up the furniture backs each time.

| I'd arrange the couches differently, coz I don't think I'd win the battle of the changed rules.

| LOL, I agree....good luck with that! If it works you should publish your training technique here, because I thought I was going to do the same thing. I will say, I don't mind mine up there because they are generally pretty clean and I don't worry about them tracking dirt up there. I worry more about the way the come barreling down off of there when they are excited or when they jump off from up there. I worry they are going to get hurt doing that.

| I thought Louis was the only one who sat one the back of the couch looking out the window at the squirrels! LOL! Good luck with trying to keep yours from getting up there. If you figure out a way, please share the idea with the rest of us!

| The top of the couch is Buster & Maggie's favorite place to sit to be able to look out. I would never be able to get them off of it. If you are successful, let me know how you did it. Good luck!
