| Introducing a "furless" kid to the furkids... Hello, My wife is 22 weeks pregnant and we have 5 yorkies. Our oldest Houston, doesn't like kids (long convoluted PetsMart tale). Anyway, I was looking for advice on how to introduce the furkids to our first furless kid. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

| Scent as many of those little dollar store fleece blankets with the baby's scent, and distribute them to your dogs, to get them used to the baby's smell. Maybe get a video of babies and play it often to get the dogs accustomed to the sounds a baby makes. Never allow the dogs to have access to the baby unsupervised, keep the baby's door closed or gated at all times. It may be a good idea to purchase a book on the subject. As most Yorkie owners refer to their dogs as babies, the search isn't bring up too much useful info...

| Allie is not good around little ones, she likes to chase, bark, and jump at them. My grandson who is 3 now understands not to run otherwise she will chase and bark at him. When he was younger I would keep allie separate from him. Maybe that was my big mistake. If you have family or friends with little ones i would babysit OFTEN so your crew will get use to the noise and all the activity, when babies are newborns its easy to keep pets away but as they become mobil and start sitting up, crawling, pulling themselves up the dogs are going to be just as curious as the baby is. the more they can be exposed to babies the better, good luck and congratulations on your upcoming bundle! |

| My beagle was 11 years old when my oldest son was born. When people came to see the baby we made sure that everyone fussed over the dog. He got toys and treats and lots of hugs, then they went to see the baby. When I held my son I would also reach down and pet the dog and let the dog smell the baby. He was always very good with my son. My sons were older when I got my Yorkie, they were 10 and 6 and Sammy was always very good with them. But I honestly don't know how he would be around a new baby. Good luck to you. |

| Thanks so much for the replies so far. We did get a CD with a baby crying (who would have thought there would ever be a market for that?-another missed opportunity there.) Most of the dogs perked up their ears and started pacing, but no barking and stuff yet. Blankets with the scent are a good idea. I just don't want to have to rehome the baby after he's born because our little Houston tries to eat him. Hahahahahaha.

| Yep, I'm working with Bella and my twin grand-daughters. They are 10 months old. I got Bella from a girl that had a three year old and they got along good. 10 months old is a little different. Bella is jealous of them when she is in my lap. So when the grands make their way to me, Bella starts to growl and tries to get snippy. I've been putting her down on the floor and that seems to be helping. She doesn't get that way when my husband holds her. So our next plan is to let him work with her and the grands. I think she will be ok when they reach about 2 or 3. I've notice with that age she does well with. (Crossing my fingers) |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | When I had my dtr 25 years ago I had a 7 year old male yorkie named Zorro. He was very sweet but had never been around kids. I had never even left him alone for a night so just my being gone a few days was hard on him. When we brought my dtr home from the hospital I had my Mom bring her in to the house and put her in her crib in her room. I went and gave Zorro kisses and attention and he seemed ok. Then that evening I was sitting on the couch holding my daughter and Zorro was laying next to me. All of a sudden he yanked the little premie hat right off her head. I was so surprised as he was such a gentle little guy. We started putting my dtr on the floor in her Kangarockaroo (I know I am dating myself) and we let him get use to her. Of course we were right there. Pretty soon I would sit in the chair with Zorro and my dtr both in my lap. After that initial hat snatching he was fine with her. Which was a good thing since I really hated the thought of giving up my dtr. lol Hopefully Houston will adjust to the baby.
