Donating YT 4000 Club Member | What makes a breeder good vs bad? Hobby vs BYB? To me it seems pretty obvious: A good breeder: Breeds for the betterment of the breed. Shows to get approval of breeding stock. Does health testing of all dams/sires prior to breeding. Provides a comprehensive health guarantee. Is very selective about who their pups go to. Has an open door policy to prevent their pups from ending up in shelters. Sells only on spay/neuter contracts. Spends years studying genetics of their breed. Understands that they are responsible for creating this new life- and therefore, they are responsible for the quality of that life. A bad breeder: Breeds for profit. Breeds the "flavor of the month" cross breeds. Doesn't perform health testing. Has minimal or non-existent health guarantees. A hobby breeder: Doesn't show, but breeds only to standards. A BYB: Makes excuses for why they don't do all those other things.

| I could not agree more... and thank you for the post earlier. You are SO right on the numbers... If you do a search in ASPCA for puppy mills, the qualification is when someone takes the money over the well being of the dog... SO TRUE!! I really do wish that people knew how bad puppy mills are... we show and spend hundreds of dollars on our dogs... thats the way it should be! They live better than we do, but they are our kids... thank you for posting your thread! |

We have turned away 10 times more potiential buyers than actually placing a dog. Funny how you can get more information on someone when needing to know what kind of home they have than it does to shut down a mill. Our dogs live better than we do, but they are our kids... thank you for posting your thread! |

| The term "hobby breeder" has always confused me. How can a breeder who doesn't show breed to the standard when her breeding stock has never been judged? If a "hobby" breeder isn't investing money in showing, isn't the money she makes on each litter a profit? |

Show breeders don't make enough money from dogs to cover the expense of showing. Any money I have made has gone back into the dogs. That is what a hobbyist does. They use the money they make to put back into their hobby.

| Marj, I agree with this. A hobby breeder who doesn't show is still, by definition, a backyard breeder. I consider myself a hobby show breeder because this is my hobby and I'm sure not making any profit on it. |

hobby breeders will make money only if they cut corners... anyone that has considers themself a breeder (a good one) will tell you there is no money to be made at breeding... with the cost of food, shots, meds, vet certs, OFA's, and everything else you need to do it right... the money is long gone before you ever have a puppy... this does not include the shows and travel that is involved to do all of this... we breed dogs... VERY SELECTIVELY... and I can reassure you this cost us 4x more than you make by selling a litter of puppies... if your breeding to try to make money than you are breeding for the wrong reason... in my oppinion...

| I would like to add that if they do sell breeding contracts, the first dog to this person is a co-op buy. My breeder has told me that if I ever wanted to get into breeding (I want to breed yorkies that are made for agility not only confirmation cause that's my passion) that she would never outright sell me my first dog to breed. It would be a co-ownership and she would have final approval of what I do with it. That way I can learn the ropes together and not hurt the dogs or breed a bad mix. She has always said that she would love to help me, and of course she also said she wouldn't just sell a breeding dog to anyone. That showed me that she cares about who does what with the breed.

| Defination of Hobby Breeder is one that has shown extensively and emersed themselves in the breed, but no longer show, but continue to breed. In other words those that came before us, with those great kennel names.
