| Why Show Dogs. For what purpose? I would like to see how many people really know and understand what showing a dog means. Good Breeding practices for producing healthy Yorkies. For what purpose? Why not just put two dogs together and show the puppies. Let's make this an informative thread! |

| I don't show yorkies but I show maltese, so feel somewhat qualified to answer. Showing your dogs to their championship demonstrates that your dogs meet the breed standard. It shows commitment (because anyone who shows knows it isn't cheap!) It's pointless to breed pet quality dogs and hope for that 'rare' show dog because when that rare show quality dog is bred, the cycle usually repeats itself and you get more pet quality puppies. Not that there is anything wrong with that - but if your goal is to breed your next show dog, you dont' want to keep producing pet quality puppies. |

| As stated above and on the AKC website. You show to gain approval of your breeding stock. Exhibiting is not to rack up the # of champions you can get. It's to insure your dog meets the standard, prior to breeding. However, as an exhibitor/breeder one must delve deeper and be honest with one's self. Only take the healthiest and the best representation into the ring.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I use to think showing was a frivolous thing, somewhere for people to "show off" their dogs, much like a beauty contest. I have since learned that it's very difficult to properly evaluate ones own dogs, every pet owner thinks their dogs are cute, but there's so much more in evaluating a dog for breeding purposes. A person can learn a little about what standard is by reading the breed's standard, but to thoroughly learn what great structure is, you really need to be around dogs who have great structure, seeing them walk around the ring gives you so much information on what a proper yorkie should look like. Showing also allows you to meet other breeders who can help teach you more and even find dogs that might improve your line, if you have taken the time to learn how this is done. I get the impression that some breeders think just breeding a show dog to their line will improve their line, however this is just not true. Also, the yorkie attitude is a very important quality in a yorkie, and going to shows and seeing this is person is the best way to understand what this means, many dogs who have the looks just don't have the proper attitude, and this is such an important part of the yorkie. Showing is about preserving and improving the breed, I think it's impossible to be a great breeder if you don't show, it's too easy to develop "kennel blindness."

| When breeding correctly, you are not only producing quality show dogs, but you can track health problems in the lines, up to a point. You know what lines to stay away from and who to breed to. The goal being to produce quality healthy puppies that meet the breed standard. Showing them validates your breeding program as well as health testing the adults and the offspring. I see no point in breeding pet quality. It is a crap shoot. A mish mash of bloodlines with probable health issues being thrown together. There would be no consistancy in the offspring. ie: pet quality! Even if I only wanted a pet (not to breed or show) I would only buy from a breeder/exhibitor. I would be more likely to get a quality healthy puppy that actually looks like a Yorkie (or a different breed if I was looking for a certain breed) than I would if I bought from someone just selling pets.

| I don't breed or show at this point, but am very interested in the subject. Great thread! I hope this helps people understand the point of supporting quality breeders who watch out for the health and quality of the breed!

I would prefer a breeder show but I don't think it's absolutely necessary in every case to be considered a good breeder. And, kennel blindness takes place often within the show world, even show people would have to agree I would think. OP...I am aware of the purpose for showing, it's an assessment of breeding stock.

| I also was one of those who thought dog shows were like beauty pageants until I got my first Yorkie in 1984 back in England. Her breeder and I became good friends and I learned the reason for showing from her. I bought Beamer from a show breeder and it shows. He also has that "attitude", his groomer says he has the "stance". He was almost a year old when I got him (he had his first birthday the day after I got him),and I think he must have had some kind of training. I could have got a Yorkie from a local breeder, there were plenty advertised in the local paper. But I wanted a reputable breeder. I love watching the dog shows and seeing the beautiful dogs - not just the Yorkies although they are my favourite. Love the way they carry themselves. They are really poetry in motion!

| I too thought showing dogs was all about beauty. But there is so much more to it. Good Breeders breed for Structure, Coat, Color and Health. You want a good representation of the Breed in the Ring. Most of these breeders/exhibitors will also sell some of their stock to pet owners. These are the people in my opinion you should buy your dog from. Not a petstore or your friends mom who breeds or even your local kennel. Research is your best tool. Start with the YTCA website and meet the members in your area. You cant go wrong. Now there are people who show dogs that should not be showing. Thats why you need to Research before buying. |
