| Is your fur baby NOT allowed outside? I was wondering because of skin allergies or other problems if your Yorkie is not allowed outside other than to ride in the car. She already uses pee pads indoors so that's not an issue. I have been having alot of trouble with rashes and itching. Then last night she had big quarter size whelps on her back. I'm thinking about not letting Chloe go out because she gets into so much. Last week alone she ate turkey poop, a couple tiny bites of a buckeye which scared us to death but vet said she didn't eat enough to harm her but still she had abnormal heartbeat from just a couple bites. She ate a mouse and carried another in her mouth yesterday. She also digs in the dirt and eats who knows what. I ordered her an agility dog tunnel a couple days ago for exercise. I'm getting so frustrated with watching her itch, we may have to do allergy testing to find the allergen. I hate to do that to her, though. Does your baby get into that much outside? |

No Longer a Member | Rizzo gets into everything outside, luckily there are also my land ladys cats outside to take care of the rodents, though there are the rogue lizard or two that he tries to catch and kill I just have to keep a close eye on him, but I could never keep him from going out, he loves it too much. Then again we aren't allergy sufferers. |

| Prince wasn't able to go outside because of his CT. The pollen in Georgia is really bad...almost year round. He would have difficulties breathing, even after being outside on the deck for just a few minutes. We would take him for lots of car rides, though. He loved that.

| Do you live on a farm or something? I am just wondering because it does sound like a lot of "stuff" at her disposal. That would concern me too. I don't think I could allow mine to have any freedom if there was that kind of stuff for them to get in to. Mine eat a lot of mulch, and that's about it, but if it's available to them, they'll be the first to dig into it. I wonder if you could get one of those metal exercise pens and put it in on a nice clean grassy patch. Some of them are pretty good size. They are kind of nice because you can move them around from place to place, but still know they can't get into things and still get a little sunshine and fresh air. It could be something from inside as well causing her allergies so until you know it is hard to say if keeping her in will help. Sorry you are having so many problems with allergies. I hope you get that figured out.

| JMO, it would have to be an allergy that really was bothersome with no treatment available to not let my pup outside. Since dogs are pretty much wolves, I just don't think it's fair to them to expect them to stay in the house all the time. But I also don't think Yorkies should be allowed to hunt, eat random things outside, etc. So unless there is close supervision, running around outside probably isn't a good idea. How about leash walking? Yes, allergy testing is a good idea. If it is presumed to be environmental and you really don't want to test, then you could talk to your vet about Atopica (although it is an immunosuppressant and very likely not healthy, esp. long term). Ellie loves it outside. She be devastated if she couldn't go sniff.

| On a nice day I will take Tessa outside for a bit. I follow her everywhere to be sure she does not get into anything, but I also have a covered 12x12 pen that she has access to from the house via dog door. I have artificial turf inside and rubber mats. So she can still go outside and get fresh air and enjoy some sun that peak through. She is only allowed out there when I am home because I still worry that someone could take her if they know she goes out there. We also have hawks and coyotes so it is safe for her to be outside. |

| My lil Shay, does NOT go outside....we live on a mountain, in TN....there are just to many animals roaming around (bears, bobcats, coyotes, deer, snakes, fox. you name it we got it)...we tried going out on the deck, within 5 min. we have hawks and buzzards circling above....if we lived in a neighborhood we would be out walking all the time, but it just isnt safe here, for Shay.

| Are you sure her allergies don't come from what she is legally eating? What kind of food do you feed her? I know my Bella will eat almost anything inside and outside so I have to watch her carefully and since she only goes out in my yard then I know most of the things she is possibly going to get. Her favorites are tree bark, dirt clods, bugs, sticks and crickets.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Tallulah has allergies and her vet wants me to limit her time outside. She does play in the yard at Yorkie Camp - the choice between her staying alone at home and letting her have outside time with a dozen other Yorkies was a no-brainer for me. But she doesn't play outside in my yard - there are lots of blooming shrubs that would make her miserable. |

| I think it's unfair to keep a dog inside 24/7 personally. Unless, like Prince, who had a MAJOR medical condition. Dogs will be DOGS! I don't care if they are 3lbs or 100lbs... they need fresh air too. Imagine keeping yourself indoors for your entire life. You wouldn't do it to your kid or yourself, why do it to your dog? Humans have allergies too, and we still will go outside. I suffer at certain times of year, but I take medicine. I could never be cooped up inside all the time, and Jackson couldn't either. There's a little 4lb Yorkie that goes to the dog park every day and has bad allergies but he LOVES his visits to the park every day... so the owner just has to go home and clean him off when they get home. No biggie. Just because our dogs are small, they are still dogs, sharing 99.8 percent of the same DNA as their wolf ancestors. And sometimes I do think people forget that fact. Yes, I treat Jackson like my baby and consider him like a kid to me, I spoil him with treats, toys, and everything else above, but first and foremost, he always gets to be a dog first. He wants to get muddy? I let him. He wants to go swimming? I let him. I've never held him back from anything unless it was truly going to harm him of course. I would never let him just run loose or anything and eat everything he wants. But that's where a great "leave it" or "drop it" command comes in. Basically just because your dog is eating a bunch of stuff outside doesn't mean you should keep them from outside. You could train her, or keep her mind occupied with other things outside. Jackson always seems to find things outside too but I offer him something better like chicken or a treat to drop whatever he has. If it's something like a stick, I just let him chew on it. Certain bugs I encourage him to eat, LOL. If there's one in my room, he usually will take care of it for me They were bred to hunt and kill rodents. Or I keep him on a 50' leash - just use preventative measures. Make a small fenced in area, etc.

Yes, if they have allergies and it's a really windy day or bad pollen day; perhaps THAT DAY they will stay inside. If they have a life-threatening medical condition ~ then that's another story. Allergies can usually be controlled - especially skin allergies. I have a Westie and they are famous for their skin allergies. Frequent bathing, prescription, cortisone shampoos, high quality, lower carb food - help us to keep Ringo's allergies under control. Also the occasional Zyrtech if he needs. Ringo is a Westie and they love, love, love to be outside! He would really suffer indoors 24/7. Lucy loves to be out too - though not to the extent that Ringo does.

| I would love to take Shay for a walk, see him play outside....but I wont even walk around here....town is a 45 min ride...so going daily isnt a possibility, since I work from home...we take him out with us on the buggy, most evenings and def. on weekends...BUT weekends, we get him out, weither it is the at the park or walking through town, or running errands ...how I would love to live in a neighborhood, and walk a few times a day....

| Sammy goes out everyday (only on a leash, never allowed to run free) except if the weather is bitter cold, deep snow or a nor'easter. My boy is getting older and has some health concerns, so when the weather is too cold, etc., my baby stays in. I think all dogs should get some fresh air and exercise each day, unless they have a medical problem that would get worse. We always have to put their well being first. |

| I also agree with Brit. I was a little leary when I got Zach but he watched my two Basset Hounds and My Shorkie running around the yard and he looked so sad that I had to give in. Now he goes out with the other dogs and he's really happy. I would hate to have him cooped up in the house all day. Although he gets into trouble sometimes I deal with the problems as they come up. If I kept him in the house he might be healty but he would be a very sad puppy. |

| I live on a 15 acre farm with ducks, chickens, goats, sheep, cows, pigs...you name it and I do not "let" Selphie outside. I take her for walks off of the property, and to our parks. But I do not let her roam mine. Too much going on...I have a 10x10 kennel she stays in if I am doing yard work but she hates it in there :-(
