YT Addict | Exercise and walking?!?!? Ok so here's my story. I live in the country, and not like soe stores here and there, like plain COUNTRY! I personally hate it and as soon as I get the chance I am moving to a big city, well that's besides the point. We live on pretty much a main road with no sidewalks so I would never walk Coco outside near the road. The thing is I don't really have anywhere to walk her. I walk her around the house everyday about 5-10 times (we have a pretty large yard) but not so much anywhere else. You have no idea how boring it is walking the same area everyday! I can't let her off the leash becuase she'll run away, so letting her run around isn't really an option. I've tried to play fetch with her in our basement wwhich doesn't have furniture on the one side-well it does, but not much- but she doesn't like it, she'll run for it but then either won't bring it back or will bring it back but won't give it to me. I really want to give her good exercise but it's hard with where I live and I can't drive anywhere. I'm sorry this is so long, but I'm stuck! Can anyone give me suggestions?!?!

| I live on 3 acres with my 'backyard' being 90 acres of farmland. NO sidewalks. No fence. Not a neighborhood whatsoever. Jackson would never survive if we just stayed here at home all day, lol. I sacrifice a lot to get him the exercise he needs, lol. First, I found a nice neighborhood with sidewalks about 5 mins. up the road. So I drive, park my car, and we walk for 35-45 minutes or more. It can be a pain but it's often necessary; change of scenery, new smells, sidewalks to walk on, etc. We do about 2 dog park visits per week. There's a dog park about 10-15 minutes down the road where he can run free and there's another really nice dog park 20-25 minutes away we go to every Saturday. He's also currently in agility classes every Saturday and we're on week 4 out of 8. I bring him to my dads house (45 mins away) once or twice per week to run around in his fenced in backyard with his dogs, etc. Sometimes I will just put him in the car and run some errands, bank, and things like that, as he loves to smell out the window. And we'll go to Petsmart, Petco, etc, as much as possible -- usually once a week. He loves to walk around the stores. If it's just a lazy day, he's also content to just stay home and inside. So it's not like he has to be constant go go go but I think he's okay with that because of the exercise he gets during the week... so missing a day or two is not a big deal. We just do indoor games, like trick training (mental exercise) or playing fetch inside. I realize not everyone has the privilege of having dog parks close by, or a parents house with a fenced in yard, etc, but I'm just giving you some ideas of what I have to do.

| Is there any way that you could fence off a section of your yard - even by connecting a few ex-pens together to create a temporary fenced-in area? That would give her space to run around in your yard.

I was thinking about that, but I wanted to start saving for an actual fence because if Coco sees a rabbit, she's gone!! Haha! She's part Cocker Spaniel so she's a hunting dog! Not really, she's pretty girly but when it comes to catching an animal she'll get it!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Lexi never brings back what she's supposed to fetch. For example if I wanted her to fetch tennis balls... I'd bring 3 of them. Throw one...and then when she's running around she looks at me and i show her another one...then she drops the one in her mouth near by, and I throw the second one. Incase she doesn't bring back one or the other I have a spare =D Walking around the country I guess gets boring...but try make it boring. Why not invest in some sort of agility course. Or find things for her to do. When I see tress in a straight line, we run in and out of them. Or when there is a rock, I tell lexi to "up" and she jumps up. I give her really REALLY tiny treats. (Its basically a penny sized treat broken up into many MANY pieces, just so she has a taste of it and gets motivated) Hope this somewhat helps. Lexi is only 11months, yet I feel i've learnt so much about her and what keeps her interested etc.

| You mentioned it's boring walking in the same area every day: I live in the city, but don't have a car. So we are walking around the same neighbourhood every day. It's boring, but I often listen to podcasts and I make a point to notice new little things. Going to visit my in-laws in the country (1.5 hour drive away) is awesome because we can let Indy off her leash to run around while we walk and check out their (huge) yard. Just wanted remind you it can get boring walking the same route no matter where you are, country or city. It's up to you to make it worth the walk

| I don't have a fenced in area at my cottage and too much land to fence...but I've created a dog run. It's fairly simple. You run a line (I used clothes line) from the cottage to a tree about 50 feet away. You have to make sure the line is high enough to walk under comfortably. ..in my case I need to drive the car under it. Then I used a piece of nylon cord and a simple link to let the cord run freely along the line. A clasp on the other end of the cord attaches to Charlee's harness. This way she has a free space to run without getting tangled. A couple of safety precautions. The cord should reach from the line to the dog...but not be too long that she can get her feet or neck caught. I would never use a collar to hook her up in case she harms herself chasing bunnies: ) And I would never leave her unsupervised because of her vulnerability to predators. |

| I too live in the country. Surrounded by corn and bean fields. We have a blacktop road that runs in front of our house. No sidewalks. Our road is busy a couple times a day. I take Bella for walks out on the road to the 2 lane highway and back to our house, which amounts to a half mile per trip. I would say if your road isn't busy use it. When I see a car coming I pull the leash shorter and keep Bella walking right beside me then. |

| Yes, this too! I can't believe I forgot. I have a 50' training lead for Jackson (it's a yellow rope from Petsmart) and I play frisbee, ball and run with him on it. I actually have two 50' leashes and sometimes attach the 2 together so it's 100 feet of space for him!
