| Tail question, please help Hello, My dog had 5 puppies on Thurday night, unfortunatly the smallest one did not make it. I had planned to have their tales done on Monday but My vet and my husband are against it. Of course my vet said she will do it, but it shortly will not be done anymore to any dogs. I really feel like a yorkie should have a short tail, but do not want to lose another due to stitches, infections etc. Thank you for your input. Cindy |

| I think by Thursday it may be too late to have them done. I keep reading that the magic day is day 3 if you're going to have them done. I'm no breeder so I don't know what the answer is. Do you have a mentor? What does he/she say about it?

| I think it's not worth the risk of losing any of the puppies My little girl's tail was not docked because she was so small at birth, and I absolutely LOVE it! At a week, it will be far too late to do it without anesthesia... Please don't dock.

| If she had the puppies Thursday night.. Monday is only day FOUR.. it is perfectly safe and the perfect time to have the tails and dew claws done on monday. Congratulations

| For tails being done it's a personal like or dislike, but I would have dew claws done for health reasons. They can get caught on things and tear. A vet should know the time window when this should be done. Maybe as your vet doesn't like to do this you should call another vet.

| That decision is up to you. If done properly, you shouldn't have to worry about infection and there should be no need for stitches. Of course, if your vet refuses to do it, then what are your options? Have you been trained on how to do it yourself, or do you have a mentor who is able to help you? |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | I think yorkies look beautiful with short and long tails. The docking of tails has been banned here in England for some time now so Poppy's tail has not been docked. But she has a broken tail... Im not sure how or when this happend. I noticed it at around 8 weeks old and took her straight to the vet, the vet said it looked like it had been broken for some time as it had healed. He said sometimes this can happen when the pups are being born or when they are very young. The break dosnt bother her and now that her fur is longer you cannot see it, but it must have been painful for her at the time and this is something which could have been avoided if her tail had been docked.

| Tails are done between 3 & 5 days. However, an additional factor should be taken into consideration. Weight. I never have them docked if the pups were premature and/or reaches 6 to 7 ounces. I have docked them at 7 days on a premature litter. The risk of infection is a very low & and if it does occur it is isolated and can be handled with ebson salt and warm water baths. Bleeding if any is minimal. I've yet to have any.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I personally would like to see the AKC and other influential clubs come out against any cosmetic changes to the dog's body - tails, ears, etc. Dewclaws, I can understand because they're so easily torn and can be painful. I had two of my cats front claws removed years ago because I couldn't control their scratching. My then vet said it would not be painful to the kitties because they were so young. Baloney! They came home with their little legs in bandages and with splints to keep them from trying to walk on them. And they were clearly in some pain. I learned later that declawing is the equivalent to removing the last joint of your finger. I will never do that again! |

| Tail Docking (help) Thank you all for replying to me. I have decided not to dock the tails because my husband was very against it. While they are nursing their little tails are wagging away. It was hard to imagine to pick them all up and cut those cute little tails. Thanks again !! |
