Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Collar size? My vet told me that when I pick up Tallulah on Thursday I should take along a breakaway cat collar with a bell and put it on her right away. That will give us a better chance of finding her if she's out of sight (like I'm going to let that happen). I just realized that I have no idea what size cat collar to get. She is just 12 weeks old. Can anybody give me some idea what the range of neck sizes on a 12 week old Yorkie might be? Hooray -- another excuse, er, REASON to go to the pet store tonight! |

| A collar on a yorkie for be just for show and contact info, not be attached to a leash, because of the possible collapsed trachea. You should be able to stick two fingers comfortably in there. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | The collar will have only the bell and a nameplate on it. She will have a harness for whenever a leash is appropriate. But I don't know what size collar to start out with. Thanks for pointing that out because I did not make it clear in my post. |

| I also just brought home a 12-week old baby, her name is Scarlett and she is 1.1 lbs! I have a cat and a two-year old yorkie already so we have quite a full house. I bought a dog collar that can adjust, the smallest one available (I think it said x-small). I personally am not ok with the cat collar with a breakaway because it has give in it. Just the other day, I had Scarlett's too big and her poor little arm was stuck in it. Those cat collars can stretch and if they can get room in the collar they are more capable of getting it caught on something or themselves and hurting themselves pretty badly. Luckily I was there with her, but had I been gone it could have turned out very badly. Just my opinion but get one that fits snug, be able to fit one finger in there and that's it until they get bigger then you can adjust accordingly. Better to be safe than sorry. |

| I would think a regular cat collar would work... you usually can make it smaller if needed. I used a cat collar for Khloe and she was tiny. I'm so excited for you!! Can't wait to see pictures!

| This is a bit awful to mention... but serves a purpose as a warning: cat collars don't always break away when they are suppose to. We had a cat (many years ago) get it caught on a chain link fence, with unfortunate results. For our Yorkie puppies when we brought them home we just got the smallest dog collar and added a bell to help us hear them as not to step on them. They also make (very inexpensive) little dog collars made of a soft nylon material that you can cut to size (and shear/melt the ends with a lighter to prevent fraying). They come in a variety of colors and when our dogs were puppies I bought them in an array of colors for fun because they were so cheap. ... of course that led to matching leashes, harnesses, and color coordinating clothes...! Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | What an awful experience. I've never had that happen -- I did have two collars break away as they're supposed to when one of my cats caught them on the handle of the reclining chair. I think the first time was accidental and the smarty did the next one on purpose. They were indoor cats and guarded like the gold in Fort Knox, (no less than three doors between them and the outdoors at all times) so I gave up on keeping collars on them after that. |

| Aw! I'm so excited for your puppy to come home. I've seen some pretty teeny doggy collars. I know Jackson, my 15lb'er is 11" around his neck (collar size is usually 10-14") and he wears the 3/4" width or 5/8" width ones so I'd imagine a little one would be pretty small. Have you checked out etsy.com? A ton of really good sellers who make great personalized things and I'm sure someone would be willing to make a small collar!

| Rocco was about 3lbs when I got him and I used a tiny nylon dog collar. It was very lightweight and soft...I think it was a 7-10" size. It was the smallest one they made.

No Longer a Member | You should be able to find kitten collars, though I didn't use a collar at all for Rizzo (paranoia, I read too many horror stories) but now he wears a break away cat collar with a bell when I let him out at night. The cat collars seem to be able to adjust pretty small, but I'm sure they make them for kittens as well. |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | The best way is to take her with you and try them on her, thats what I did with Poppys collar. Its always good to get a collar which you can adjust too as it will last her longer as she grows.

It took her a day to get used to. She'd go crazy trying to take it off, but because I refused to take it off when she complained she got used to it much faster than I thought she would.
