| Help with new dog I recently got a 5 month old male Biewer and a 7 month old female Yorkie from the same breeder. The female seemed laid back when we saw her. We took her home first and picked up the Biewer 10 days later. The female was problematic with eating from the beginning. She still seemed active. Once she finally started eating regularly, she turned into this very agressive, active dog. The breeder said she was very laid back and that is what we saw at the breeders house. The female Yorkie harasses my other dogs when they go out to potty and will not stop. She knows "no" and "off" but doesn't comply until you have said it way too many times. She does not respond to the water bottle at all. She thinks it is fun to catch the water being sprayed at her. I am at my wits end. She is a beautiful dog with great bloodlines but goes non stop in spite of all the exercise she gets running the pen. My other dogs have stopped playing with her (and they are bigger dogs) because she plays so aggressively. I have had to physically pick her up outside so that the other dogs can go potty. Can anyone give me any advice on how to help this dog fit in with everyone. The Biewer is doing fine with everyone but the female Yorkie acts like the energizer bunny on drugs. I would appreciate any help. Kim |

| First she is still a pup at 7 months and some are quite springy...... they usually take 2 years to "chill out" but the more hyper ones stay rather springy through most of their lives.... Is she spayed? She is probably an alpha female and they can be the hardest to control at times if not spayed. I am thinking that when you say aggressive you mean dominant/alpha. Try typing in alpha dog in a google search and check out some suggestions. You do need to get control of an alpha as they can wreak havoc in a home and within your own pack.

| I agree, if YOU don't become the alpha, she'll take the spot. Read all you can, keep working with her and get her spayed as soon as you can... oooh.. and try a little apple cider vinegar in the water bottle.. tastes bad and they don't like the smell.. don't think she'll think it's much fun "catching" the water after a few tastes of it with the vinegar in it nasty stuff! -Diana

| One of the reasons I picked this female is that I wanted to breed her one time and then spay her. She has fantastic blood lines and show lines. I have had dogs all my life and have never had a puppy come in trying to be the alpha like that. My only worry about the vinegar in the water bottle is that it might get in someone's eyes. She isn't the only one who gets sprayed. I have two Basset Sisters who get it all the time. Kim |

| After you spay her she should calm down. I know my Shorkie did I never thought she would though. Now she's a real lady. By the way I also have two Basset sisters. |

| I love my Bassets but they are high maintenance dogs to have. They didn't calm down until 3 years old and I wasn't sure I was going to survive them. They are the smartest dogs in the house and the most obedient. They will do anything for a treat!! Kim |

| Not sure about the eyes.. all I know is I have a houseful of Yorkies, I spray and no one has ever had an "issue".. I usually just spray in the air or by the ground.. also have a friend who has been using this method on her yorkies for 20 years without any "eye" issues.. but I understand what your saying.. I've got a great bottle for out on the porch.. I'm getting very good aim!! LOL -Diana

| When the other dogs fight over a toy, I squirt into the battle to stop it and it does end up on their heads. The female Yorkie just shakes the water off if I spray her. So if she isn't trying to catch the stream, she doesn't react like the rest of the dogs with the bottle. Sometimes with my Bassets, all I have to do is mention the bottle or just pick it up and they stop in their tracks. This Yorkie is not bothered by getting wet like all the other dogs. |

| Hi Kim My Bassets are 14 months old and I'm going crazy with them. Between the Bassets, the Shorkie and the Yorkie I'm ready to collapse by 7 pm at night. I also love my Bassets because they are so loving but so bad. So far they're eaten the cable tv wire, the air conditioner wire, the wire on my friend's jukebox and all the insillation in the shed. They must have nine lives because all the wires were plugged in when they chewed them and they're still alive. Annie |

| I call my Bassets "Twisted Sisters". We got them without knowing how high maintenance they are. Actually, we got one and when we had issues with her playing so hard, we went to get her sister so that she would have a playmate. One of the sisters is a big chewer and has destroyed 3 cell phones (blackberry's) and at least 10 pairs of reading glasses. Dixie waits for me to leave my laptop and looks for anything I may have left out so that she can chew it. She grabs the contraband and heads for her crate to devour it. Hang in there. They do slow down, but it might take until they are 3 years old. Mine are 4 years old now. They are like having toddlers. I can't leave them in the house alone. At night, they sleep in their crates. Basset Hounds can get into trouble in an empty rubber room!! |

| You better believe it. You are the first person I know who has a Basset Hound, much less two. My Bassets are sisters also. I call them Peat and Repeat because whatever one does the other has to do also. I know this is a Yorkie forum but I was so thrilled to meet somebody with Bassets I just had to talk about them.
