| "If that dog were mine, I'd put it to sleep" I need to vent!!!! Oliver is a hard dog. He's a rescue and has issues! He is making progress everyday, but will ALWAYS be a hard dog. I've accepted it - he loves me despite my flaws, both physical and emotional, why should I judge him???? Oliver HATES men. Hates em. Haven't found one he likes yet. It's apparent that some sick demented man out there beat the crap out of him somewhere along the line. He freaks out anytime a man so much as moves let alone speaks. Water in the face is helping a bit, but his fear outweighs his hate of the water, most times. My brother turns to me one day, after Oliver had a barking fit because my brother got off his chair (granted, annoying... I hate it, but it won't go away overnight), and says "If that dog were mine, I'd put it to sleep. He's way too stressful". I turned to my jerk of a brother and said "Well Oliver has caused me a million times LESS stress throughout his life than you have through yours, so perhaps I should put YOU to sleep and call it a day!". Seriously, WHO says stuff like that to people????? He was the type that babied his dogs until he had children... now his attitude is that if they get in the "way" he'll put them to sleep!!!! When he said that, I said "What, too lazy to find them a new home? When your kids get in the "way" you gonna have them put down too??". Needless to say I'm glad at the moment that he lives 2000 miles away. Thanks for the vent!

| I agree, good comeback! I'm sorry he said that to you. Rescues can be hard work, but they are so rewarding. I'm glad you are so patient and loving to Oliver! He is a lucky boy to now have a mama like you!!

| Siblings often say stupid things that they don't mean. My brother can be a huge butt head, as well. Just be grateful you don't have to deal with him all the time and blow it off. |

| I agree with that....and people tend to judge way to quick, so I have learned to just ignore it.....Rescues are always gonna have a hard time accepting people, so I give you credit for standing your ground!

| I wouldn't take offense to it after all your brother doesn't love Oliver like you do but I would try to work on Oliver's issues. I really don't personally believe in spraying them in the face. Personally, I think that will make things worse. It sort of confirms what he already feels, when men are around, something unpleasant is going to happen to him so even though I know you don't mean to, you are reinforcing his bad behavior. I have been studying SATZ training for over a year now and you would be amazed at home much your dog can understand and learn with this method. I would highly recommend that you check it out as Oliver sounds like a prime candidate for this! Here is a link that has more info, I hope I see you there! | Jenn, How long have you had Oliver? I had rescue dachsies and the first three I had were from the same puppy mill that was closed down. They didn't like men. It was a whole year before they really accepted my husband. But no-one ever told me they should be put to sleep, and if they had I may not have been responsible for my reply

| I agree with all above, good come back. My husband fusses if on of the pups miss the pad a bit I just smile and "say hey we didn't get rid of the kids when they peed the bed". |

I would suggest having your brother (or any other man he gets this way with) feed him treats or pet him or whatever he enjoys. Help him see that he will not be hurt again and that he can trust men. As for your brother's comment, that is unacceptable! What a disgusting and horrible thing to say I really hope he did not mean it.

| I have a rescue too, 3 years and it's been a long road and she is still coming around. I think some rescues had a harder time then others or it's their personalty. Do you have a male living with you? If you do have that person do all the feeding and fun stuff. Don't spray water on her, have the person give her a treat. Positive reinforcement is better then negative.

| Excellent retort! You are a doll to take on Oliver and give him the love that he has obviously been missing. As for his issues, heck, I know several women that feel exactly like Oliver. I bet in the long run, Oliver will be easier to correct then they are!
