| Short Haired Yorkies We purchased a Yorkie from a breeder when he was about 6 weeks old. When we got him, I noticed he didn't have the full coat, but I was told that it sometimes takes a while for it to fully present itself. We know the parents were both long haired yorkies. Well, he never has gotten the full coat we were expecting, although it has grown in some. So, I began to do a search on short haired Yorkies and found that there is such a thing, although they aren't common and aren't "desirable" as far as breeders are concerned. They are often born to 2 long haired parents. Apparently, some breeders have bred these types of Yorkies. I have to say, he is unique looking, but adorable and we absolutely love him. Would trade him for all the long haired Yorkies in the world. But I was wondering if anyone else out there had a short haired Yorkie and could show me some pictures? |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | How old is he now? The coat can take a long time to grow in they arn't just born with it. Sometimes pups are born with a cotten or wirey coat and this dosnt tend to grow quickly, they are not desirable by breeders because the standard coat is silky. Most good breeders breed to the standard and to better the breed which is why they are not 'desirable'. But like I said it can take a long time for the dogs coat to grow... how old is the pup?

| Ziggy He's 3 months old. I would say his basic coat is silky, but the new hair that's growing in could be classified as wirey. This is my first Yorkie and other people have shown me pictures of their Yorkies at 2 months with much more hair than he has. Other that the coast, he has all the right features. He's adorable. |

| I would say give him some time he is still very young and should just now be leaving his mommy. My female had about a inch long coat at 12 weeks and my male had maybe a 1/2 in coat at 12 weeks they both have totally different coats Dustees is very thick and his is very thin, Dustee has stayed black with the darker almost red brown and he started to change his color at about 9 weeks turning almost silver with the light tan colors. They both have silky coats but dustees is very thick compared to Sugar Bears. Hope this helps the first pic is sugar bear (thin coat) and the 2nd one is dustee (thick coat)

| 3 months old is entirely too young to grow a full coat! I was under the impression that it took over a year.

| To begin with, the breeder let your baby go way too early. (That's besides the point, but I wanted to put that out there for any others that may be reading these threads.) Yorkies take a year or more to grow out their coat to floor length. There are some with wiry coats that may not ever reach full floor length, though. But at 6 weeks and even 3 months, it's too early to know for sure if your baby's coat will grow very long. You'll just have to wait & see! That's why yorkies are so much fun to watch grow...you never know what you're gonna get.

| There is such a thing as a red legged Yorkie. Their coats stay short. You can do a search here and find out more. I attached a picture. |

| Ziggy Wow, thanks everyone for all the information! I had no idea that there were so many different kinds of coats, etc. I also didn't know that he was too young when I got him. He seems to have adjusted well, he's even already potty trained! His only issue is not being able to hold it all night. I'm sure that will come in time. He's a smart little thing and soooo entertaining. I'm sure that at some point I'm going to become a multiple Yorkie owner! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | At three months old, he's age now when many of us got our Yorkies, and none of them had a long coat at that age. Cotton coats grow faster than silk coats, but they don't even grow that fast, it took over a year for Joey's coat to reach the floor.

| Red & Black Short Haired Yorkies? I have 4 Yorkies now, 3 of them are related......Father, Mother and their Daughter and they all have Full/Floor length Coats year round. I have never shaved their Hair, regardless of the weather/climate or time of the year even when they were puppies! All 3 of them are very light in Coloration - Blue/Gold. The 6 month old puppy I have is Red & Black and very cotton/stiff coat, when I first got him 3 months ago, I trimmed the Hair around and in between his paws/feet and the Hair has never grown back yet? I have seen his Mother and I know his Breeder, she is a Friend of mine. His Mother, is also very Red and Black and never changed Colors? With a very short stiff Coat as well. I don't think or know whether there is a seperate category of short or long haired Yorkies? If there is, I have never heard of that term? I just know that his Breeder told me to shave his Coat/Hair b/c it would never grow out to be a Long Full Coat due to his Breeding, w/c there was nothing else I could do? I wonder if Coat Coloration has anything to do with it? I also agree that 6 or even 8 weeks is too young to let a Puppy go, I think the older the better, the less Training I have to do, that is if the Breeder did their Job? From my past experience w/my first 3, it took as long as 3 yrs. for it to hit Floor length.
