| Harness all the way! Yorkies are prone to collapsed trachea. Their necks are just small. Even my 15lb chokes with a collar often times and he's not even a puller. I do keep a collar on Jackson 24/7 with nametags but not for walking. Oh, welcome to YT!!

| You dont want to use a collar to walk her because yorkies and smaller dogs are prone to collapsing trachea but I feel you should have a collar on to hold her tags. Use a harness any time you need to hook her to the leash.

| Hi - Welcome to YT! Congratulations on your new Yorkie baby. Yes, 12 weeks old is too young to go on walks other than around your house or yard. They really need to have all the shots done and even then I think you're suppose to wait about 10 days afterwards. They can catch so much walking where other dogs have been and I'm sure you don't want that to happen. Yes, the harness is the best thing for your puppy to wear when you need to put them on a leash or ride in their car seat. I use clothing with a D-Ring or a silk harness. You can have them wear a collar for the purpose of wearing their tags - if they require that in Ireland - but not for walking. Your baby might be a little quiet because she's not use to the collar around her neck. Maybe you could put it on for a little while - then take it off again - to try to get her familiar with it. Post pictures when you can... Again, Congrats on your new baby!

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I use a harness for walking, going places. But around the house Scarlett wears a kitten break away collar so I can hear her (when it's quiet- I know she's getting in to mischief!)

| I agree with everyone. Mine wear collars for their tags, but I walk with a harness. When Sophie was a puppy, I found a harness/leash combo that had a slide to tighten it. It was very useful since it grew with her, but I must add that I would take your new baby anywhere where she could get lose and get away or get hurt. Sophie could wiggle out of it sometimes.

| Congrats on your new baby!! First dogs are so exciting, I have my first too for a bit over a year now. This site is great for yorkie specific information. I agree with everyone else. When you are going to take your little one out for a walk, attach the leash to a harness. I also have my little boy wear a collar, but that is simply for ID purposes only. You can use a breakaway cat collar for tags (ID). If they get snagged on anything, it breaks off instead of choking them. And yes, your baby is still too young to be walking outside. Yorkie babies should have their last vaccinations at 16-18 weeks. It's best to wait 2 weeks after her last vaccinations to give her time to build up her immunity. You don't want to risk your baby getting sick.
