Teeth Hi everyone I'm new and need a bit of advice

Hi all I am struggling here as I have never had a small house dog before. Two weeks ago I acquired a 5 wk pup. And before you say anything I know he shouldn't have left his mother but it's a long story and not a very nice one. I have taken him to vet and he is doing very well, bouncing about and eating the right foods, wormed etc. He is a brill wee dog and I and my family love him to bits. I have had him sleeping in a box with training pads outside in my room (hubby works nights) and he wakens me when he has to go. The problem is he is now too big for box and sleeps in a comfy bed with training pad beside it - however he will not stay in the bed and keeps running around the room thinking its fun time. Any advice on how to keep him in bed. He doesn't get his first injection until next week so I can't take him out through the day to tire him out and is it true that you cannot take a pup out until his second injection.

I would be grateful for any advice.

I HIGHLY reccommend crate training him as it will help with housetraining him later. just my two cents!

I don't have any advice but I have to say, "Wow and good luck." I'm glad that you've got him out of the not very nice past and it seems that he's going to be very loved.

Good luck with him and keep us updated!

Fynnlie, my puppy, is 11 weeks old. He's only had his first round of shots and has an appt Monday to get the second. He's already going to puppy classes and I take him on walks - around the end of my neighborhood. I dunno, though. I hope everything works out!

Welcome.

I know that you could get a crate for him to sleep in. He will be safe and won't wonder around.

Good luck with him. Sounds like you rescued this poor little guy and are giving him a good life.

I'm sure there are others who might have more advice.

You will love having a small dog in your life.

It is also my understanding that you cannot take them out unless they have had all of their puppy shots, as they aren't immune yet.

Thank you all for your quick replies. Think I will try and get a crate and see if that works. I really would like him to lie on the bed in the future but have heard that they can tend to get jealous when you have to share the bed with your husband.

I am at present trying to find out how to post a photo of my wee darling. By the way he is called Benjy.

HI!

The thing that worked best for Taycie was an x pen! Saved my life I was able to put her bed and "toilet area" toys and food all in her pen if I was going to be gone for a long period of time! She does however come to to work with me but there are times when I just can't bring my sweet girl!

I love her little pen and she does too! It gives her plenty of room to play and be able to use the bathroom! Since I started this I have had no accidents! I was using a crate but she would pee in it and I decided after much talking to friends and relatives that an xpen was a good idea! And seriously she is perfectly potty trained I haven't had an accident in 2.5 months!

Hope this helps!

Hello,

I would try going on ebay for a low cost play pen which will give him room to move around and potty. I would put this in the search. 2-Door Soft Playpen Dog Crate Cage Kennel 36"x36"x24"H I have one of these and love it because it allows me to put Couture in it when Im in too busy to keep a close eye. I would still get this even if you have a crate it portable and has a bottom liner that keeps the floor dry even if they potty and its washable. I even put my baby in it when I cook outside, considering that she cant touch the grass yet due to waiting on her last vaccines.

I hope all this helps and good luck! If you need a little more help feel free let me know.

Welcome! Sounds you have a little energy ball there.
As others above I recommend crate training. You can get a bigger one but they sell deviders with it so you can make it smaller for starters. It's best to get the pup used to it early, Merlin loves his and I know he is safe in there.

I agree with crate training, you'll find lots of information about it on the internet, books, and talking to the vet, etc.

Good luck, everything will turn out fine, just be consistent with whatever route you take.

Well I hate to be repedative but I agree crate training has worked with all my dogs large or small. An x pen is also good advice. Either would work, just depends how much room you have.

I'm all for crate training. Crickett uses an ex-pen during the day while I am at work, and a crate at night just to sleep in. I have found it helps tremendously if I put a cover over the crate. (If the light is on and the crate isn't covered she thinks she should be cuddling with me!) But I have found that just using an ex-pen does not work for her.

Good luck!

Wish I could help as I've tried to get Zoe to sleep with us too, but she is a bundle of energy on the bed and won't settle down AT ALL! She's slept in a crate since she was a few weeks old. Got her at 6 weeks of age and she has always loved her crate...she opens and closes her crate door as needed but she has never slept with the door closed. She does sleep with her crate in an ex-pen, and won't sleep out of it. If you find something that works, please let us know as I'm also waiting for the day. :-)

You need to wait 1 week after her last needle before you can take her outside, you wait the week to make sure the vacine has had time to take effect.
I too would recommend either crate training or the pen.
I have both and I find Poppy much prefers the pen, also it gives her more room to play and go potty on her pad at the other end away from her bed and toys.
The crate I have dosnt have a divider and I couldnt find one in pet stores over here to fit so I will be keeping it until she is bigger because its too large for her at the moment.
The crate should only be big enough for them to sleep in, if they have room to sleep and go potty away from their sleeping area then they will.
The whole point of crate training is that they wont want to make potty where they sleep so this will teach the pup that they can hold it.
Seen as she is only 5 weeks old I wouldnt expect her to hold it very long as she will need regular potty breaks through out the day and night (more so then an older dog).
If she will be left alone for long periods of time (while your at work) I recommend the pen.
