Have you asked this lady about the guarantee that she gives with her puppies? How long do you have to take the puppy to the vet for a well puppy check-up? If the vet finds that it's not a healthy puppy can you return the pup for a full refund? Would you have to take a replacement pup? Does she guarantee against hereditary and or congenital defects for at least one year, preferably two years? What is your recourse if the pup does develope such a defect? Is her kennel clean? Will she show you her dogs or does she want to meet you someplace to show you the pup (a big red flag)?

More than breeding cute dogs you need to find a breeder who offers an excellent guarantee and will work with you and be there for you if you have questions or problems.

I contacted her when I was looking for my baby. She didn't have one but recommended me to a wonderful breeder. She's not on the YTCA like my breeder but she was very helpful. She told me that all the reputable breeders in the same area knows each other.

I called this breeder about 3 years ago in my search for my first yorkie!!
She simply stated if I did not have 2500.00 to 3000.00 to spend...she was not the breeder for me!! So with that statement I continued my search!!

Thanks for the help, just checking things out. Still looking for a friend for Sofia, it's not very easy to find the right breeder and the right pup, but we'll keep looking.

That's not something I would like to hear from a "reputable" breeder. It's like money was the only thing on her mind when you called.

Sandy is a reputable show breeder and $2500-3000 is not out of the ball park for a show dog or a well bred dog in California.

I'm sure that's right, but a show quality dog would be worth more I believe. But if someone is looking for a pet, there is no reason for a breeder, or for that fact for a person looking for a pet, to be rude. That sounded rude to me.

To be fair it may have been paraphrasing, who knows. It also would have depended on the tone/delivery (for me anyway).

Also, I prefer a direct and upfront approach because if you don't have the money for the expected price then you are wasting not only the breeder's time, but your own as well. I'd personally rather know the price upfront, but that could be my businesswoman side talking.

My sister, Lori, lives in California and didn't know where to begin to look for a Maltese, so she asked me to do some research for her. I only spoke to Sandy when I was trying to do initial screening of people for my sister. She was recommended to me for either a Yorkie or Maltese by a couple of people that I spoke to. I live in New York, so I didn't go with her to get her pup. Lori got her Maltese from Sandy almost six years ago. She was four months when she got her and has been healthy ever since. Lori was very anxious to get a puppy, since her Bichon had just passed away and her other Maltese seemed to be so lonely. I wasn't fully comfortable with the amount of research that I had done since it was so rushed, but Lori has been very happy with her little girl. I wish I could give you more details than I am now. I'm sure my sister would be happy to speak with you if you wanted to. She maintained some contact initially with Sandy, but I don't think it was for long. I hope you are able to find a healthy pup to help you and Sofia cope with the loss of your baby.

I have personally been in Sandy's home and the smell alone would keep me from purchasing a dog from her. Also every dog that she showed me was filthy, even the champions. She new a week in advance that we were coming and still the dogs were dirty and it was quite obvious that they were terrified of her. I have never seen dogs cower from their own owners this way. They would roll on to there backs and act like they had been beaten. She had several that had been debarked and the males were kept in her garage, while the females were upstairs in her home. The whole house smelled so bad of urine that it burned your nose. We got out of there as soon as we could and my husband and I even changed in our garage and went directly to our showers. We just could not believe that anyone who showed her dogs would keep them like this. After talking to her we found out that she uses a handler and as soon as they are championed they are brought home to breed. These are not pets and do not get treated like pets at all. This woman was rude and I found it very uncomfortable to even be around her. This was not a loving environment for animals, I found it quiet horrifying.

That sounds awful, and I'm really glad that you posted this. Since it was almost six years since my sister got her Maltese, things might have changed. Lori went to get her pup with a friend, so if there were many red flags there, I think her friend would have advised her not to get her pup. I don't think they loved Sandy's personality, but they were impressed with the pups. Lori's dog is beautiful and healthy, but she has a problem with tear staining. She asked for advice on how to deal with it, but I don't think she found it or Sandy very helpful. Sandy had kept my sister's dog to use as part of her breeding program, but changed her mind and sold her to my sister at 4 months. I have looked at the website, and it has not been updated in a long while. There used to be a nursery section that is no longer there. Lori never raves about Sandy, but she doesn't complain either. She will often mention things to me about one of her clients getting a Maltese much cheaper over the internet that seems to be fine, so I don't think she's fully onboard with trying to fully investigate a breeder and getting the healthiest puppy. Not knowing about puppy mills in the past, she still says she got a number of nice dogs from pet stores. Her Yorkiepoo Greta was given to her by her neighbor's son who bought her from a pet store and decided he couldn't keep it after 3 days. I was the one to push her to try to get a dog from a recommended, reputable breeder. All of this took place over a two week period, so there wasn't time to fully investigate things. Hearing what you have written, I would never go back to someone like her. I was wondering if she was even breeding sincc the website hasn't been changed in a long time. I read a little on a Maltese forum about her, but didn't find much written about her.

I'm not one to say bad things about people. Mom taught me if you can't say anthing nice don't say anything at all. Well I did this for a while but, every time I hear of someone looking for a puppy in Socal, I feel guilty for not warning them about Sandy. Though I can't imagine anyone missing that smell. I'm surprised the neighbors havn't shut her down. This happened just this past summer, so it is pretty fresh insight. I would incourage anyone who doubts me, go there see for yourself. Bring a mask though, the smell is overwhelming.
