| To neuter or not neuter (AKC male) I just bought a new addition to the family. A new baby boy to be a companion to my 2 1/2 year old girl Ella. Ella is CKC and IS spayed, so unfortunately no puppies. I figured I'd never get another puppy to mate her with, and had no interest in looking for a mate (plus I did not want to deal with her being in heat). Now that we're getting this male, I'm not sure if I should neuter him or not. After all, he is AKC and if he has good characteristics he may make a good sire for a litter. Should I wait to find out how he turns out before neutering him? What does everyone thing? I'm getting him on Monday when he's 8 weeks (picked him out 2 weeks ago). |

First off 8 weeks is TOO young so right off the bat I know your breeder is no good. So because he is AKC means nothing since obviously the breeder is not reputable. I'd get him neutered and enjoy him as a pet. Big deal he is AKC and as you say good characteristics. He is way to young to know if he would be a good male to use for breeding. My male is AKC registered too and a gorgeous yorkie with champions in his line. He is neutered and being enjoyed as a pet! Just because you have a dog that is AKC does not mean he should be bred. There goes alot into it. If you took him to shows, and championed him then maybe you could think about using him as a stud once he has passed all health testing. But do you really want to deal with the marking and all the other bad habits that come with owning a male?? I wouldn't think so!

| Breeding males are huge pain with marking all of the time and the attitude changes during the time girls are in heat. I just fixed my boy that had wonderful lines...small...healthy...all tests. He was just too small at 2 1/2 lbs for me and I wanted a pet not a pisser. LOL

| Welcome to YT. Congrats on your new little one. Let me just say in Florida you are not allowed to sell a puppy before it is 12 weeks old. Please see if the breeder will hold it until it is 12 weeks old. They still need to be with their mother until then. You should really neuter your little one. Again welcome. There is so much information to be learned here on YT.

Have you any idea what goes into breeding and whelping Yorkies? Being AKC does not mean that he would make a good sire for a litter. Even if he had champion lines it wouldn't necessarily make him a suitable stud. My Beamer has champions in his blood lines, his father was a champion as well as his grandparents. But, no way would I have thought of studding him out. I had him neutered. Also 8 weeks is too young for him to leave his mom. Do your new puppy a favor and have him neutered.

| You asked what everyone thinks... I think 8 weeks is too young to take a puppy away from him mom. I think just b/c your puppy has AKC papers doesn't mean he will be healthy & doesn't mean he should be bred. I think if your breeder is letting her pups go at 8 weeks, there's little chance that she did the appropriate testing of the sire & dam before breeding. Bottom line...I think you should nueter & allow your little guy to be a very loved pet. I also encourage you to wait until your pup is 12 weeks before bringing him home.

To respond to breed or not, again most reputable breeders sell on limited registration, which means you CAN"T breed this dog. You are required to spay him. Are you sure this breeder is selling your dog on open registration? There is a lot to consider prior to making the long term decision to breed. I'm glad you are going to spend the time to critically research and evaluate your idea of stud. In the library that is the talk forum above this one, are articles on a variety of topics, one article you will want to read is entitled: Dog Breeding Your Questions answered. As the owner of the "stud", reputable breeders will want to know about all his health checks, require pre-breeding special health tests done, the health of his line. They will also be looking to see what Championships you have earned on your boy, and not just Conformation, they will look at does he have at least a CGN title. They will look at his temperament. You has the stud owner will be expected to help in the actual breeding of this dog and when puppies come along, you have a financial and moral responsibility to assist the breeder, and future puppy owners, particularly if there are genetic problems with the puppies. At this point in time, there is much you don't know and will need answers to: 1) is this dog being sold on open registration? 2) at 8wks old way too young to be assessed other than as potential/maybe, let's see how he grows. 3) Do you really really want the financial, moral, onus and responsibility of breeding?

| It's not going to be a MASSIVE issue but it is pretty big. I had to get mine at 10 weeks because his breeder had some serious health issues and was being admitted into the hospital. It leaves you with a puppy that hasn't fully learned bite inhibition so he thinks that he needs to chew on everything. He also won't know where to pee or when he needs to go, other than when it just hits him. He'll still have the issues with holding poop and stopping eating because the sphincter in his bowels will not have finished maturing yet - not that at 12 weeks it's finished, either, but it is closer. He'll still have some food issues - I have to water down or milk down his kibble so he can eat it. Those are only SOME of the issues I'm dealing with and mine is two weeks older than yours. Oh, get him neutered. It'll keep him from lifting his leg and marking all over your house and/or anything he wants. It'll keep him being your baby and not a 'working dog' that wants to go after every female... There are so many reasons to neuter. ALSO, it lowers the chance of him getting testicular cancer. Good luck and welcome to YT.

large breed dogs are way different then small breed. Small breeds especially yorkies benefit from being with their moms til 12 weeks. Theres lots of info on YT about why you shouldn't bring your baby home before 12 weeks.

From the Statutes Chapter 828.29 (4) A person may not transport into the state for sale or offer for sale within the state any dog or cat that is less than 8 weeks of age.
