| Totally baffled - need advice on puppy interaction Hello, I'm new here and searched for similar posts on this but couldn't find anything. The post is a bit long but I really need advice and the facts will help. My hubby and I got two yorkie puppies a week apart about 7 weeks ago. First the boy who is now 8 months, then the girl who is now 11 months. A week after we got her, she went into heat unexpectedly (according to her breeder. We had planned to spay and neuter them both in July), so we had to separate them and it was stressful for everyone. Then right after she ended her heat and they could be together again, she came down with a stomach issue - mostly seems to be vomiting undigested food, only once a little diarrhea. She had a bit of stomach issues during her heat but not this consistently, and her breeder said she never vomited before. So, we got her on meds from the vet (antibiotic, carafate and pepcid) and a bland diet with small meals, and she finished her meds yesterday and seemed to be coming along for 5 days now but just vomited a small bit of breakfast (still bland diet)! So, the boy is VERY spunky and high energy and into his adolescent stage, and can be relentless wanting to romp with her. He tends to get a bit rough, and I try to let them work it out unless it gets too crazy and she is obviously not happy. Also, they share a potty area and when she needs to poo he distracts her at times and will try to get to her poo, so I separate them to allow her to go but she then seems stressed and at times then won't go. Could her stomach issues be due to stress? Could she be almost "too full" since she has these potty issues due to him? We love these little furry babies SOOOO much and want them to be happy and healthy again so they can have a normal life, and I am completely baffled at this point. Re-homing either of them is not an option, we are too much in love and want so badly to make this work. Any insight or suggestions are enormously appreciated! |

| Also, forgot to add that she is quite submissive and sweet in nature and he is quite dominant. |

If it is at all possible can you walk them? Do you have a partner that can walk one dog with you the other? Maybe then they can both go potty outside, without one interferring with the other. You mentioned spaying both in July. Has this been done? Could her stomach reactions be due to the effects of anaesthia? If you haven't spayed her or your boy yet, are you worried that mayhap the two got together somehow and mated? What is her water intake like? Does she drink and have access to water all day? I'm sorry for all the questions, but just want to have a clear picture

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What food did the breeder (where she had no tummy issues) have her on? And, did you change the food 7wks ago when you got her? Did you look at her teeth? Has she been teething at all, this whole time? A teething dog's entire digestive tract can become very acidic - and a pup may even have some nausea/diarrhea during teething. Does her poo look "normal"? What was the antibiotic given for? Also, are you saying she is trying to poo at times, and then is unable to go at all? (ie, when the boy comes over, interrupts her etc) Stress has a big effect on the GI system in general...but it seems there may be more going on here....

| I appreciate the questions! - here are the answers: I'm not sure if she's constipated so much as not getting the proper opportunity to poo - they are crate trained and are out of the crate in the morning, then several times during the day, then in the evening - but she seems "shy"about pooping (not about peeing though). Her breeder had her in a large crate with a pad and she thought she was supposed to poo IN the crate, and we over the last month have switched that to crate training and potty out of crate on pad, and she has gotten the idea, but the little guy can interrupt the process sometimes. He literally stalks her when she goes in to poo and I pick him up, then he barks and can interrupt the process - she startles easily. They have a bathroom area upstairs in our bathroom that she will use, but she hesitates even more downstairs in her area in our family room. They are still chewing too much to be left alone in a room unsupervised or to have full run of the house. We can walk them but the heat where I live has been really hot for walking, and they are potty pad trained. We couldn't spay or neuter them in July as she went into heat unexpectedly - her breeder thought August or September, so both are intact. I highly doubt that they mated, they were either separated or we literally stood over them the whole of her season. He jumped on her back once for literally two seconds, but they didn't tie. Also he has retained testicles. I actually asked the vet about this incident and he thought it highly unlikely that anything happened. She has access to water all day, but since she's been on the bland diet (Purina EN moist canned food - she used to eat Royal Canin dry) we don't visually see her drinking, but she could be in her crate. To be safe until she is through this tummy thing we have been encouraging her to drink with 1 kibble in her water bowl while we watch a few times a day, and she takes in water as she tries to get it. Her urine output seems fine. Thanks so much for your interest, I'm really trying and am so stumped! |

| more answers..... Her food was Royal Canin dry, and that's what she was eating when she started the tummy problems, breeder fed that and we didn't change her diet at all. We switched to Purina EN canned as a bland diet when the stomach trouble started, and have been on it for about 5 days for her tummy problem. she has tolerated that well until just now. She is very hungry! I'll check her teeth, although the breeder said she had remaining baby teeth pulled and should have all adult teeth - but that's a GREAT idea and I'll check them! Could be another tooth issue maybe? her stools are normal, solid. But now that you mention it, maybe too hard, and maybe she needs more water even though her pee is good? The vet gave the antibiotic thinking it might be a stomach bug. He also gave carafate to coat the GI tract, and recommended pepcid 2.5mg twice a day - she just finished all of that yesterday, and the vomit was 4 hours after her bland diet breakfast today - it was only a portion of the food undigested. I started this last Friday and Saturday with 6 small feedings, then 5 Sunday, 4 Monday and Tuesday, and was trying for 3 today (total of 1 cup of food - she is 8lbs.) THANK YOU!!! |

| My little one, a few days shy of 9 months, has always had stomach problems. I bought probiotics from PetSmart. A friend of mine recommended it since she gave her baby probiotics when she has stomach problems. It comes in capsule form and I just open it up and sprinkle on his food. It has been about 4 weeks now and all of his problems went away (vomiting, diarrhea), and he used to have them almost every other week. If she's dehydrated, give her pedialite. Hope this helps. | What is the name of the probiotics you use? I think that may be helpful for her. That, and more exercise, and better opportunities to poo uninterrupted, might all be helpful. We are considering gating her in our bathroom during the day rather than crating, so that she can have unrestricted access to potty without our little guy, even though she gets multiple chances every day. |

It's called Nutri-Vet Probiotics for Dogs. I think there are other brands that should work just as well. I just went out and bought the first one I can find because back then all the antibiotics are not helping his diarrhea. I was fortunate that this one worked out so well. The other day I caught him eating a snail. In the old days, that is guarantee for serious diarrhea (brown water with nothing in it) and vomiting (continuous every few minutes, then once everything is out, still vomits once in a while for days). However, he was fine, no problems at all. His stool has been looking very healthy in color and firmness, very consistently. I strongly recommend that you give probiotics a try. Have you considered taking them out at separate times to poo? Get them on a different pooing schedule? Last edited by MochaBoyMom; 08-04-2010 at 11:46 AM. | |

| I am wondering if that bland Purina diet has any corn in it?? Because some of the prescription type foods use corn and dogs are usually allergic to it so you just trade one problem for another!! When my dogs need to be on a bland diet, I start with boiling some white meat chicken, then I take the chicken out of the pot and boil some rice in the chicken water. For the first day I usually just give some of the rice with the broth in it. Then I start adding in some of the chicken, a little bit at first and more as they tolerate it, until their tummies are back to normal. Also, for the poop, I add about a teaspoon or so of canned pumpkin, not the pie mix, just the plain canned pumpkin. It is a fiber that dogs can digest and it works well for hard poop or soft poop, and usually works really fast. I hope your babies get better soon. I got 2 pups from the same litter, a boy and a girl, they love each other but the boy is much larger and more rambunctious and the girl is a little sweetheart, but I usually allowed them to work it out and she is very tolerant but when he keeps at her, she lets him know now. So long as one pup isn't hurting the other, it is better for them to work out their own relationship. I do think that the crating might have something to do with it to because mine were together 24/7, they slept together, ate together everything. At first I used a kid's play pen when they were tiny to keep them out of trouble when I wasn't home and when they slept at night. Then I put up a baby gate in the kitchen and they got put in the kitchen when I went out. They might need more time with each other, relationships take time and I'm sure in time they will be best buds. Good Luck.
