Default I am so mad!! Errrrrr!!!

My dh and I went to Subway today. As we pulled in, there was a blue car that we pulled beside of. My dh went in to get out sandwhiches and I knew we probally had a while to wait because I could see so many people in line. (We were parked right in front of the door) My dh said, we'll be back sometime and we laughed. I sat outside in the car with our 2 yorkies that we take everywhere with us. About 10 minutes of waiting in the car all of a sudden I see a little dog jumping in the car beside of us. He was trying to get to the cracked window, I guess to get some air. I opened my door and looked the car over and to see if the car was locked which it was and all the windows were rolled up except for a little cracked at the driver side. I couldn't even put my finger in that crack. I was so madThat poor dog was so hot!! It was hard to tell how long that poor little dog has been in there but you could just feel the heat in that carI went to door at subway and held it open and hollered if anyone owned the blue car that had a dog in it? No one at all answered meEveryone just looked at one another. My dh looked at me confused. I was so madI just didn't know what to do. That poor dog was now crying and yelping at me wanting me to get him out of that hot car. I started crying. I said to myself this is just not right. So I got my cell phone out and called 911. I told them the whole story and that no one claimed owning that car nor the dog. I told him about all the windows being rolled up except for a small crack on the driver's side that I couldnt' even put my little fingers through. The dog was miserable. NOW, get this, the 911 operator told me since the window was cracked there was nothing they could do. WHATIs this true? Has anyone heard of this? I didn't know what else to do . I didn't know anymore numbers. I just started crying over the phone and told this guy that this was an outrage!! I told him if he could see this little dog screaming and trying to get himself out of that hot car. I rolled down my window and put my phone out toward the car and he actually heard the dog crying and going crazy. I told him that his tongue was just hanging out and he was breathing so fast. It was so hot today and there was no shade at all. I had our air on full blast and I was still hot in our car. Well after I vented my frustration and anger to the 911 operator he said, well why dont' you give it 5 minutes and if no one comes for the dog then call us back. I said it has already been over 20 minutes already that we have been parked there and that dog has been in that car before we pulled in. But there was nothing else he said. He said give it another 5 minutes and then if no one comes for the dog then call them back and they would try to take care of it. I was so mad and hurt. About the time I hung up my dh came out to the car. I told him everything that has happened and that we couldn't leave for another 5 minutes. Well, after I got done telling him about me calling 911 etc. this young guy comes out of subway and comes towards the car beside of us. He is the owner of the dog!!! My dh said what a minute, this guy was way ahead of me in line. He said he has no idea what that guy was doing after he got his order. I told him well he didn't ever come out. Well, I rolled down my window and I am sure he could tell I had been crying about HIS dog. I told he should never leave his dog in such hot whether in the car like that. I proceded to tell him his dog could die or have a heat stroke. And told him he could get himself into alot of trouble and told him this was animal cruelty. He said not one thing. He proceded to light a cigarrette right in front of me and acted like he could care less. My dh told him that was just wrong and we proceded to leave and he just jumped in his car with nothing to say not one word. As we were leaving we seen him back up his car and then go to the gas pump and hop out and shut his door again with the dog in it and started to get gas. ERRRR!! Has anyone ever heard that if they have the window cracked no one could do anything with the dog owners like 911 told me? Please someone let me know about what to do the next time if something like this ever happens. I hope it never happens again! I just like to know what you do when you see such a thing like this> Who do you call? What do you do? I thought that when I called 911 they would call the police or something and do something about it. I am just shocked about what 911 told me. And I felt so bad for this poor dog. So sorry this is so long, but thank you for reading my post. And if anyone knows what should I do if I ever see this again? I hope I never have to see this again

Good for you! I'm not sure what further you could have done. 911 is what I would think of too.

Maybe the local police?

I know it was 90 some degrees here and I wouldn't even walk my dogs outside in this heat MUCH LESS leave them in a car.

What a jerk. I hope the dog doesn't pay the price for his stupidity.

What a flippin' JERK! I hatteeee seeing dogs locked in hot cars. Totally uncalled for. : Some people just don't look at their dogs like we do, I guess. So many dogs have been dying this year because of heatstroke/being locked in cars. I would think Animal Control would be able to handle a situation such as that better than the police dept.

Oh my...I would've been in jail for breaking into that man's car to relieve that dogs suffering!

I think a fair punishment for people like this is to put them in a hot car locked and see how they like it!

However if I didn't want to go to jail...I probably would have exaggerated the condition of the dog to get that idiot 911 operator to do the right thing...or take down the license plate number and maybe reporting it to Animal Control...or video tape the whole thing and turn it over to a news channel...argh! People with no brains...it's sad!

That is horrible. I can imagine how frustrated and scared you were. I think animal control may be able to do something if there is one on the area.

My hubby is a police officer and he said that if the dog is in distress and you can clearly see it, then you have the right to knock out the window to save the animale..and there is nothing they can do about it.

that poor baby!! I can not believe how stupid some people are!!! I suggest that you call and demand to file a complaint against that 911 dispatcher you spoke to! Call the police/sheriff offce in the area you were and demand to talk w/the cheif /sheriff and tell them how rudely the dispatcher treated you and how they didn't send you an officer/deputy when you asked for one. Seriously when such a call comes in they should send an officer by if not for that poor dog then because they think you might go crazy on the owner when he / she returns. So poor dispatching either way. I will tell you that I know here the rules are windows need to be open for air to pass through, and water down for the dog. And our animal control respond and take an internal tempature of the car before they open cars. Until dog is clearly in detress then our pd will open cars however needed to save the dog.

The 911 operator should probably have just connected you to the local police right?!

Don't some states have laws that you CAN'T leave your dog in the car? Or county laws? I see a sign in our Giant grocery store about it that popped up this summer so I'll have to see if it's a law or just a caution to people.

Any chance you got his license plate? You could call it in to animal control.

I've seen dogs locked in cars and I have not hesitated to call the police. Fortunately, they've always responded quickly and efficiently...

Sorry you had to deal with that. It sounds like it was really draining for you. You did all you could and hopefully next time that guy will be more considerate to his poor dog now that you made him think about his actions.

This is for Maryland...

Post Now - Police: Dog dies in hot car in Md.

It says it's "against state law to leave a dog in a car unattended in a way that endangers it's life or welfare"

So I guess that means in the fall on a cool day you can run inside Subway and grab something but any warm-ish day you cannot... or am I misinterpreting this?

See, that is what I thought would happen right, that the police would come quickly to save this poor dog. I was sooooo upset. I just couldnt' believe the 911 dispatcher telling me their was nothingthey could do as long as he had the window crack. I ask him can he not call the police or somebody and he said no. I just feel in my heart that their needs to be something done about this. Oh, I did give the 911 guy the lic. plate number but whether he wrote it down or not I don't know. I told him it seemed like he would be able to contact the police or someone to help!! It was so sad and heartbreaking to see that dog in such distressI was crying my eyes out. And then to talk with this heartless person that was the owner of the dog, he just didn't care what I had to say. He just lit his cigarette and started smoking and ignoring me but I keeped on running my mouth at him and telling him this was wrong and illegal and he could be charged with animal cruelty and that I reported him. He seemed to care less with what I had to say. I wished I could have just jumped in his car when he opened it and grabbed that poor dog and take off with it. Poor Baby

I am so sorry you had to witness this poor dog in a hot car.I would have been so mad.I keep a note pad in my car and write a nasty note and stick on the car and tell them police have been called so they stress about it.

It really is way to hot for these poor animals to be in a car in the summer. Some people are clueless.

The 911 operator should have been more helpful.

I witnessed this at walmart once took there plate down went inside to have the manager tell me its against store policy to get involved & that I needed to call animal patrol. So I called animal patrol a few times and no one picked the phone up.

HOLY COW!!! Can you believe my state is one of the 14 states!!!!!!!! I just knew it. I told that 911 dispatcher that this was animal cruelty and wasn't their a law about it. I wasn't sure if it was my state or not, but I continue to tell him this was just wrong and something needs to be done for this poor dogI am going to print this out and have one in my car also. I will be prepared next time, hopefully I will never see something like this again, but if I do I am going to call 911, the police and whoever I can. If you would just have seen this poor little dog in distress. He was trying his best to jump up to the crack window to stick his head out to get some air. It was so hot in that car, even I felt the heat in it. I went all around that car and tried to open every door but all was locked I think the owner should be punished for what he done to this poor dog. He probally does this all the time to that poor baby. Thank you so much for posting the info. on state laws. I appreciate it so much

This link should be made into a sticky & those of us who live in states without laws protecting animals in hot cars should lobby to get something done.
